If you are only highway towing it can be closer, if you plan to boondock and wander into the undeveloped areas, a little higher is better, mine is at 6in, as I do tend to go off the beaten path more...

Thanks all for the advise, I ended up with a 2012 Ram 3500, with the automatic transmission. only 73000 on the clock. FULLY loaded.

That is good info on the length. I built a trailer to meet the length requirement for my UTV, wasn't sure how they saw it. Also thanks for the info on the wiring for the plug.
