I need to buy a new brake controller for my 2011 36RL. I have a 2004 Chevy one ton. I am not sure which one I should get. My old one did not work well with my Redwood.

I currently have a Tekonsha P1. had it for 8 years.it won't work with the disk brakes on the new Redwood we ordered. I have ordered the Tekonsha P3. it is for both.

GMs require and interface unit to make the on-board controller function with the Disc Brake Hydraulic pump. I have that on our Montana and it works great. Seems GM is looking for a pulse back which it doesn't get with the Disc, so the interface provides the required feed back to the controller to work properly. I love our builtin controller, it works much better and easier then either my P1 or P2.

Lots of info on various internet forums. I think the "interface unit" you're speaking of is actually a Carlyle HBA-CAM module. If you have'11 or'12 GMC or Chevy with thefactory brake controller, you will need one(around $100) in order to "wake-up" the factory brake controller for use. It seems that the HBA-CAM module is wired-in before the disk brake electric/hydraulic pump and provides the feedback (load) needed to activate the integrated controller's brake voltage. Without this feedback, it just sleeps.
I contacted Redwood about this issue becauseI ordered thedisk brakes optionon my 36RL.I was worried I mightarrive at the dealer with no way to activate the trailer brakes. Apparently, Carlyle has recently introduceda new pump that has anHBA-CAM "fooler" built in. Redwood is checking whether their disk brake pumps contain this revision. I'll post what I find out.

Does ford require this module? I thought I read some where that I will need it but a lot of other people say I will not. I have a 11 ford.

I went with the Tekonsha P3. I will be able to just flip a switch, to go to plain electric trailer brakes tothe disk brakes, as I have other work trailers with electric only.

According to Carlyle, the HBA-CAM module was designed for the Ford unit, but it works on2007.5 through 2012 GM also.

Good news is... Redwood responded back this AM that the HBA-CAM is built in to the Carlyle pump on their disk brake option.

Does anyone have this combo running? The module is not a very well known item, but they are available on-line.I don't think you can justpurchase one at your dealer if it's needed when you take delivery...
