Also if the room temp drops about 5 degrees with the heat pump set, as in the middle of the night, the furnace will start & run til the room temp catches up to t stat setting.

Next time you go to use it, set the temp 3 degrees above ambient. As long as outside is above 38-40 the heat pump should cone on and start making decent heat in about 2-3 minutes. After it reaches the set temp, if you need to, bump it up in 3 degree increases. If it doesn't work this way then either thermostat or the unit has an issue.
