Weather alert system

Any recommendations for a weather alert system?

Spent years at sea using National weather services, here are links to Canada & US. If you want Alerts, select the appropriate page and then your region. You can also get forecasts, or if able, maps to self read.

Honestly, the older units with the extendable antennas work best. We have both the newer digital ones and the older ones and found that the older one was more reliable and gave us a better warning.

It got a nice workout for 6 weeks when we were in Oklahoma. Woke us up several nights with Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. Was nice to know high winds and hail were on their way.

The smartphones now give you warnings where you are located. We have a high dollar weather radio at the house, our phones now go off every time it goes off. Oh and its very loud and has the NWS warning tones pretty cool.

"MY Radar" application for iPhones and Android phones works great if you have cell service. It will send weather warning to you based on your location. The realtime radar is helpful to see how hard you are going to be hit by the storm and helps to approximate the length of the storm front. We also use accuweather on our cell phones as it will provide you with up-to-date reports from NWS. I have been thinking about getting one of those crank-up weather radios just in case we cannot get cell reception.

Thanks for the help w/ pointing me to NOAA and the weather alert radios (WAR)

After looking at a lot of these WARs and reading recommendations, I'm leaning to the Reecom R-1650 NOAA All Hazards / Weather Alert Radio. Seems that the basic functionality of programming what alerts for a specific area are there. I like the End of Message capability and the presets for the AM/FM as we're talk show junkies. I didn't think having Solar or Crank power capabilities was required as we'll be in the RV and have the generator and lots of batteries. Having the external antenna and output jack for sound was also desirable. I thought this would be more reliable compared to a smart phone app due to being possibly out of coverage (ATT)

Is anyone familiar w/ this WAR or recommend a different one?
