Mr. RCFlame,

Have you been hanging out with the Professor? He would have told me the same thing!!!

Haven't seen him since the rally last year, but hoping to make it in Aug. for a recharge.

Me too. Only heated water on propane.
I found the left thermostat (marked 232305-2) was fried. Ordered replacement (232306) to repair - was $22.00. If the right one is fried(marked 232257-2), then you need 232282 to replace - about $19.50.

Redwoods use Suburban model # SW12DEL. Standard thermos are 130 degrees, but they make 140 & 150 degree replacements if you want to upgrade.

Water Heater - Electric side not working

FYI . My 2013 36RL hot water heater stopped working yesterday on the 120V side. Gas side works fine.

The issued were burned wires inside the junction box attached to the actual hot water heater. (had to empty cargo bay and take down the boards that hide all of the RV working components)

The wire nuts were completely melted.

Could not determine why the wires were melted. Have to assume the original electrical workmanship was poorly done.

Cut wires back to fresh copper. New wire nuts, added electrical tape to hold wire nuts in place. Hopefully done.

Pull the black cover off of the reset buttons on the outside & I'd bet you will find the wires shorted against the tank where the cover has mashed them. Mine & a good friend with a RW found that on ours & trimmed about 1/4" off of the cover & repaired the wires to the thermostat.

+2 with what Danny said. When he posted it I put checking that cover on my "to do" list and glad I did.

Mine was wearing and not too far from shorting through. Easy fix, and dumb design by Suburban.

I did noticed my wires had a small indention and very small bit of bare wire was showing on the thermostat wires behind the black cover. I trimmed the metal plate and taped the wires.

I believe it is more bad workmanship when assembling the water heater same thing happened in my previous fifth wheel (Palomino Sabre) and it happened to our 36 fl Redwood, so it doesn't matter how much you pay for these rv's you have same QC problems.

I once had a similar problem and then I had to call in brothers plumbing to inspect it. The issue was that there was something amiss with the gas supply. I initially thought that it was an issue with the unlit burner. The gas has to be on at the gas meter and you must make sure that the knob at the water heater is in the on position. In electric water heaters the reason why water does not get heated properly could be because of a fault with the unit’s heating element, which may need a replacing. Hot water heaters should be cleaned often.Hard water can be softened with a water softner. You should try reducing the water temperature in the heater to 130F.A rusty hot water heater will need replacing. If the hot water seems to be just trickling then you will have to adjust the heater thermostat. If they are still not working right then you would have to get them replaced.

FYI - DSI stands for "Direct Spark Ignition". Not all manufacturers opt for that feature - it was a nice feature of Redwood a long with the 12gal tank. Without it you have a pilot light.

Thanks Danny and Highcountrybarry! We are pretty excited, and look forward to some travel this summer without having to stay within 2 hrs of the hospital waiting for that call.
