Price of trucks

Was on the Ford website today so just for grins I priced out a 2017 F450 with every option available ......... Came out to $225.00 less than $80,000

Not that I was planning on a new one. I really like mine and like it even more now. Add in the fact that I've actually got equity in it and it's even more appealing.

Not sure where this will end but between the truck and an upper end fifth wheel, were in serious DP territory.

That's what pushed us. We decided we wanted better quality which ended up being heavy. This led to a larger truck and of course I needed Ginny to work while I was driving. Then when we test drove a new Sport Chasis, we didn't think it could be used as a sales car around hospital parking decks.

In the end we figured the payments were very close and the comfort & quality were much better with the DP. In the end, everybody has to figure what works best for them

For us ......we now enjoy each journey and wouldn't go back

How true Vaughan... Trucks are getting out of reach for some folks. I was shocked at what our 15 cost.
I was thinking the same about cost verses a DP and I guess that is why we were looking at this one last weekend. Probably will hang out to see what RW does in the next year but this one has us thinking. I need storage before we hit the road for good. Not an Entegra but has a lot going for it in our price point even though it's still Thor.

Steve - for you especially a big tag axle DP probably makes the most sense. You could put together a 20-24' enclosed trailer for your shop and design it so that a small car could go in the trailer along with all your shop stuff.
I see it now, Steves Travling RV Modifications. " we go anywhere, just ask". Lol

Its funny how this forum always seems to read my mind sometimes, the DW and myself are planning to go to the Super RV show in Tampa in January, and were planning on looking at LUXE, DRW AND REDWOOD, and the new coaches.
We really like the Luxe with the entire Mor Ryde suspension and hitch, but was concerned with weight and even though I know my F350 would pull it, still have concerns and if a truck up grade is necessary then like you say, it puts you in same category.
Lot to think about, with miles per gallon, got this one to where not really giving any trouble, and could jump from the frying pan right into the fire.
Decisions decisions decisions.

One difference with Entegra though is that Thor acquired them not long ago...
expect the Thor flavor to start influencing Jayco-Entegra in due time...


having come from a 350-RW combo to a DP, I can tell you the mpg is comparable even towing a 5k lb jeep...
(and don't tell anyone, but my tires are rated @ 75mph ) NEVER towed the redwood that quickly...

something to be said about that picture window out front!

What MPG's are you getting with that DP? I get between 11-13 with my rig, are you getting that. If so, I need to reconsider my options. My brother has an American Eagle and he only gets 6 MPG. I believe he pulls a Honda CRV but he said he figured out the fuel expense and he said it works out the same whether you are pulling a fifth wheel and traveling around town with a F350 or you get to your destination with 6 MPG and then you travel around town
with a CRV getting 25+ MPG. Something to think about. I've been fascinated with the Super C's with diesel engines. New, around $120 - $139,000 and somewhat smaller than the DP's making it easier to get in and out of places.

with my 44ft Entegra that has a 450 cummins, even pulling a full size quad cab 4x4 silverado I average 8 mpg. In all honesty though if mileage is a big concern, don't buy a 45,000 lb RV.

Wow! I would say that's great mileage. I can't see me ever in a 44ft DP but as everyone already knows, The perfect rig doesn't exist, but I keep looking!

We have been Considering a Newmar Ventana Looked at one over the Labor day weekend and Wife has been trying to make a deal on the MH with the Dealer. I don't think it will happen as she is really low balling the MH but if it does we will then have to sell the RW and truck. I am not trading it in dealer would not give anything for it be better off selling our selves.


Do like the Floor Plan of the MH and she likes the bath and half.

on edit RW - we too have been courted by Brett @ NIRV about the Ventana 4369 all electric @ about 30% off... but having just got the Monaco up to snuff, it's hard to change again !


SO many variables in mpg -
the only real comparison is what YOU get on YOUR routes, with YOUR rigs, and YOUR driving style...

for US, it is almost a wash AND so are the payments - which was the deciding factor - now those $300 27 gallon oil changes and mtce. are not a wash

NOW, If I want, I can make the dp-jeep combo mpg MUCH worse by using all 425 hp and 1250 lb-ft of torque from every stop but I only do that most of the time to keep those slow drivers behind me !

You might want to consider the Entegra Insignia. It's comparable in price with the Ventura but has the Spartan Chasis, side radiator, 10 kw generator and the 450 cummins. Just my opinion

it's not bad and the diesel isn't broke in yet. I run about 67mph and get around 8 but if I slow down to 62 I can maintain 9. After it gets broke in I'll gain more MPG but I'm not worried about it. I love the 450 hp and 1250 ft pounds of torque. It's a nice ride

With our current truck exceeding $80,000 (with new 25K hitch and sliding bed cover plus taxes) we explored DP's. As we only use our RW three months per year we will revisit DP's when DW retires. Thor's Tuscany is high on our wish list. We have looked at several and compared to other brands (visited a Tuscany dealer while at the 2016 RW rally). It is a nice rig hands down. The fuel mileage is a little less than the RW/Silverado 3500 DW High Country scenario however fuel mileage is not an issue for us. RV'ing is our get away fun time.

I was looking at the Insignia but no one around here has one to look at. Did find a nice Aspire we liked but the Dealer was not ready to deal could only get them down 25% and was not enough for me. I am in no hurry have the RW and not much camping for the rest of the year winter time gets better deals when sales are really slow here in the Pacific Northwest.

I have and older dodge with the Cummins. If you are looking at your mileage now it may be inaccurate. My Cummins finally stopped using a little oil and the mileage increased about 30% after I had about 40,000 miles on it. However with the weight of the DP may help with the break-in process and that may happen in less time/mileage. I always take mileage figures with a small grain of salt. There is so many veritables in the fuel itself. California has some of the worst fuel in the states from a mileage point of view.

I figure MPG just gives us something to compare because it really doesn't make that much difference. If we were that concerned we'd all be driving small cars and carrying tents. The quality of fuel sucks most of the time and for the life of me I can't figure out how to avoid high winds.

I can be sitting next to the rig enjoying my morning coffee without a breeze until I get behind the steering wheel. Once we get moving the "wind gods" start blowing either from the side or the front, but rarely from the rear. I believe I could drive into a headwind for 300 miles but if I turned around and headed back, I'd still have a head wind.

I had 3 class A gas motorhomes before getting my RW. I seriously considered a DP. Just something about sitting behind the wheel of a powerful DP that just gets into you, but for me, the cost of a good DP, adding the cost of a towable vehicle with all the required attachments; tow bar, tow vehicle brakes, etc. Then the thought of this expensive DP sitting for months in storage....well I had decided against getting one.
What I paid for on my truck and RW (new) was in the low 100K. I drive my truck daily, so I am getting plenty of use out of my truck. When my RW is winterized and in storage I don't worry like I did with my class A's. I had several mechanics tell me it is not good for an engine and tranny to sit for long periods of time, could dry seals, or cause other problems. I would go to my storage during the winter and drive my class A's several times a month because of what I these mechanics told me. With my RW, I winterize and forget.
For me, my RW and truck combo just works for me. Now if I won the lotto....well, who knows what I would end up with

Just got a 2016 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 dually in May to replace my 2012 4x2 F350 extended cab dually after a scary winter without 4x4 in Canada. Paid more cause of the current $0.75 Cdn dollar.
Looked at DP and Gassers when we looked at the RW in 2012. Same money but similar issues noted here and I really use my truck all the time to move stuff for me or my kids.

Dave... I used to sail and race on week nights and weekends... wind always died just as we got out to the course or was blowing on "the nose" when we went pleasure cruising. Nothing changes...
