Medium Duty Trucks

Here's what I found on Medium duty trucks:

I can buy a new medium duty truck from a Freightliner dealer for around $85,000. This would have 1000 ft pounds of torque and 350 hp. I would then drive the truck over to a shop in Indiana and spend about $30,000 for a conversion. If I went with the larger 450 hp diesel I would have to pay an additional 12% excise tax and the extra cost of the larger diesel and larger transmission to handle the more power. I'm being told that this would add aprox. $30,000 plus the tax.

Even though I have A1 credit, most lending institutions will only finance this whole thing for 5 years. My business banker said that he would go 10 years BUT a balloon after 5 years. Unlike with car loans, these are not financed at low interest loans. These trucks are going around 4-6% and I don't like balloon loans.

In short the medium duty trucks have their advantages but they aren't easy to get financed. I'm not saying I won't buy one but......I'm looking at other options.

It's crazy to be paying that much when there are clean Mountain Masters on the market. Find one with a Cummins "C" engine and you'll be good to go. Why does it have to be new?

^ A 1 ton is plenty big for any 5th wheel made. Why go through the extra expense?

THANKS BLUE DOG! I did call Sport Chassis and was surprised at what they're offering. Brand new Sport Chassis (2011) for 125k or a new (2012) for 130k. Apparently these run a model year late. They do have financing and I'm starting to talk them and see what the terms are.

Your welcome Dave! I get a ride when you get a deal done!
Seriously, I've ridden and driven one on a few trips and they are super comfy and drive like a dream! A completely different world for power and stopping with weight! True engine braking as well! Sport Chassis trucks are supper plush. Lots of the professional Rodeo guys use them and they spend a lot of time in their trucks .... Talk about room!
You owe it to yourself to test drive one!
Good luck on your search, I'm glad I could be a little help!

P.S.
If you and your wife take a trip to Vegas in the first week of December Sport Chassis has a big booth at the National Finals Rodeo and usually special pricing. Take in the a Rodeo while you are there, it's it Awesome, the best 15 cowboys in each event in the country and all the best stock from all the stock contractors, it's exciting.

The 650 Fords used to run on the cummins they switched to the Cat (when cummins brought back the percentage they owned) I believe they are now back to the cummins. The Cummins is a medium duty diesel in a medium duty truck whereas the powerstroke and duramax are all light duty diesels

Also I believe a few years ago CAT stopped OEMing engines for other manufacturers. One of my customers is PACCAR who makes Peterbuilt and Kenworth, they had to design and manufacture their own engines when CAT made that decision.

Cat is out of the Class 8 business, actually all road engines. PACCAR buys Cummins engines for their KWs and Petes.

They have also developed their own engine, or at least were developing it 2 years ago. Keep in mind that they are global and have been fighting emissions in europe for years.

Yes there was a rumor that Ford bought Cummins when they were putting the Mighty "C" in their trucks, however they did purchase somewhere, if I am not mistaken around 9% but cummins slowly purchased all the stock back

At one time you could get a Cumins or a Cat in the 650s

There were/are a lot of people disappointed when Cat dropped out, not sure but there was a rumor they were have problems meeting the new/future emission standards

Cat elected to drop out of the on highway market because the requirements for Tier 4 compliance are so onerous.

According to Ford...As of 2015 they will only use the Ford 6.7 in all their trucks. They will no longer use the Cummins.
