Hubcaps Ford Dually

OK, lost a rear hubcab the other day going to storage - grrr. Local cost $173, found a Ford Dealer in Florida that sent one for $96.

Today, I watched one leave the truck and fly through the field. Had the Redwood on the back, so decided to stop on my way home from storage. When I got to storage, I realized I had lost both on the rear. double grrr!

Found the spot in the field - and found 3 more besides the one I saw leave the truck!!



So is it-
  1. A problem with the particular bump on that bridge?
  2. A problem with Fords hubcap?
  3. A combination, combined with my running the tires at 80psi?
I won't say it was just Ford hubcaps, because there was a Dodge or 2 (no chevs). Ironically I drove home from the Dealer over 500 miles and no issues, but their "nitrogen" package only left me 30-40 psi in the tires. This problem seemed to develop after I inflated to 80 psi, and specifically on I-25, however to be fair, I ran to Utah and back last week with only one hubcap installed because my new one hadn't arrived.

Does this stuff only happen to ME?

Wow Brad.....bad luck!! Anyhow, I've had my Dually for 4 or 5 months and no issues, in fact when I tried to get one off it was a chore. I need to make a tool. So, my rears call for 60 PSI per my sticker on the door jamb. Yours call for 80??

I haven't heard anything at the plant about this, but the dealer installs them may not have been snapped on all the way. Most people can't even get them off to change a flat.I would call the dealer since it was more then one sounds like they were not put on properly.

Well now that may be part of the problem Tim, Thanks! I didn't realize the rear tires on the sticker should be 65 and front 75. Guess I was always used to running 80 psi on the SRW I never bothered to look.

Yeah, I had to double check it (put my specs on so I could see it better) Just not sure if that would cause them to come off?

75PSI in the front & 60PSI in the rear. With the AirLift air bags it's a rough ride so Icant imagine what it would be like with 80PSI!!

Thanks Chuck, that seems to be the normal as I find out. After I get the bags installed next week I better reconfigure all my pressures.

Thanks Jim! Unfortunately, one of them I put on myself, after it came as a replacement for the first one lost I would have to blame me -

The really weird part is out of the four I found within 100 ft of each other, only one of them was mine. I almost expected to see hubcap Anny there with a shopping cart waiting for the next one to fly off!

Hub trolls under the bridge...They use them for helmets? Could be manufactured wrong and no one has complained. With all the ones that you have lost I would go nuts on them. Bring them to the dealership in a burlap bag and dump them on the service desk. They had no trouble taking your money at signing time. You may be the first advocate with evidence.

re tire pressure...
As usual, I am required to be the advocate for weighing your truck and/or rv,
finding what the real weight is on each axle,
looking on your tire mfg's website for their load tables,
and putting about 5 psi more than the load charts say you should have for the weights you have...

therefore you have the minimum psi to handle the load...

I'm with Chuck on this one. When I put new tires on mine, the dealer put 80 in the duals and I tried to run it like that for a few weeks. I've got them now back down to 60.......big difference.

I'll also bet it's an installation error. Back pre-history in my university days I assembled Ford pick ups at the factory. They sometimes had to be driven over a public road from the factory to the rail siding/loading area. Every so often a police car pulled up to the factory with a half trunk load of truck hub caps that didn't make it to the rail siding! That was before the Japanese started giving the big three a run for their money on quality.

OK, between a junkyard hubcap and finding one of the three I lost in the field, I may have it resolved. I dropped the pressure down to 60 in the rear and passed over the same bump on I-25 twice this weekend, once with and once without the Redwood. Still have hubcaps!

I can't say for sure if it was the tire pressure, but just glad I kept the chrome on the rig!

When I pulled over to show the wife the spot, she found yet another Ford dually hubcap in the grass. There is something about the weight of that hubcap and this particular bump!

I didn't catch that, thanks John.

I've tested mine 8 trips now over the same bump, and I think the 60 psi may have cured the issue.
