Help with a puzzle

Okay..... so I'm reading all the specs on the different Ford trucks and I've come across something I just can't figure out.

Why is a F350 with the 430 gears rated to pull 26k lbs BUT a F450 equipped the same is rated for 30k? They both are suppose to have the same running gear.

The F450, even though it's rated to pull more, has 1200 lbs less carrying capacity than the F350.

That is very strange...

I just tried out this new F350 with 3.73 gears and the mileage has been a significant improvement right out of the box over our 4.10s in the 2008, but pulling through the Rockies on I-70, performance was rather unremarkable. No real noticeable improvement over the old truck, (although on flat ground there is definitely improved power on the new one). I'm wondering now if I should have just went with the F450 with 4.30s.

Shame on me, I also didn't realize with the 3.73, my combined gross is only 19500, and I'm at 26,360.

Brad - I just went on Fords website to double check before I wrote this.
Trailer weight for your truck is 23,300 and GCWR is 31,900. You're fine.

Ah Vaughan - thanks for grounding me back on earth!!

I was reading up on Trailer Sway Control and this chart is in the manual!



What they didn't mention was this was the Gasoline Engine. They don't even show the diesel chart.

Whew! Not that I could do much about it now, but that would have been a huge blarney on my part.

So is the F450 rated to pull more? You seem to contradict yourself, first you say the F350 is rated higher then you say the f 450 is rated to pull more but carries less? Humm
Also wanted to tell you to look at sport chasis. They are huge in the equine industry, they are already converted and are supper awesome and very comfortable & Plush. They also have in house financing I believe. They use mostly freightliner trucks. Might be worth a ring .... http://www.sportchassis.com

Dave - I have also been taking a 2nd look, after previously having decided for the F450, but the new F350 with 4.3 is worth consideration. Believe I read yesterday that Ford classify the F450 as a class 3 truck saying it has the same frame and running gear as the F350.

The only difference I can find is the F450 has 19.5" tires as opposed to the 17" on the F350. Does anyone know if the 19.5" are low profile or is the circumference larger than the 17"?

Andy, I can't speak for the new F-450 but I recall that when I was shopping for a new truck in 2010 I had the opportunity to buy a new pre-2011 F-450 with the 19.5 inch tires or order a 2011 F-450. I was able to measure the bed height of the pre-2011 and it matched the height of our F-350 SRW closely (I was concerned about clearance between the box and the RV).

Unfortunately you can't measure the new trucks as they aren't on the lots yet, but if you can get your hands on a detailed Ford spec listing it should give you the bed height. There may be a copy on one of the Ford forums, perhaps the dieselstop.com

All the above is assuming that the bed height is your concern, if it's engine speed in gears, that info may be in the spec sheets as well. One other consideration for the 19.5's is that they may be speed limited compared to the 17's

Pulling capabilities are different than carrying capacity. The F450 will pull more but it has less carrying capacity than the F350.

Less carrying capacity because the truck itself weighs more and so GVWR minus real weight = carrying capacity.

Andy,
Not sure about the '15's but my '14 F450 has 17" tires, the '14 F350 mostly had 20's, so the truck sat almost 2" higher. My '12 F350 had 18" (ordered that way) but still sat higher than the 450 by a bunch.

I think the 2015 F350 dually only comes with 17" black sidewall tires. I could not find a way to build it with other tires. My wife noted how much lower to the ground it is compared to my SRW 2013 F350 that had 20" tires. Hope you're enjoying eastern Canada. Maybe we will run into you in AZ, will be there about Oct 21.

Dave,

I tried building several on the Ford site and think I have it figured out - they are haunting you with the gasser on the F350, because it is available with the 4.30 gears as well in the dually. That would bring down the tow capacity, but increase the payload because of less net weight.

The 450 is only available in the Diesel.

Ken, were your 350's SRW or duallys? My 08 and my 14 both duallys came with 17"- have not seen an option for anything different on F350 dually. On SRW I know you could get 18 or 20. I belive they went back to 19.5 on the 450 due to weight cappacity for the 2015 model.

It was a SRW F350 that had the 18", most came with the 20's. You're right, though, the dually's had the 17's, at least on my 2014, not sure about the 2015's.

As usual you have to really read between the lines. Ford says the F-450 chassis is "based" on the F-350 chassis. They do this to qualify it as a Class 3 vehicle. However the F-450 chassis is actually different (the F-450 Chassis Cab is very different). The F-450 truck has additional frame crossmembers added over the F-350 DRW.

As for the payload difference, I believe that's simply because a Class 3 truck can't have a GVW of more than 14,000 pounds and quite simply the F-450 weighs more than the F-350.
