A hobby farm is just a small farm that is used to raise a few farm animals or perhaps no animals, but rather just take care of the farm as if were a working farm. My sisters place has a late 1800's swedish barn on the property and the farm house is about 117 years old.

At Lake Havasu NWR we are in maintenance. I'm not exactly sure what we will be doing, but usually it could include trail maintenance and property repairs. There is a marina as well and I may be doing some light boat/motor maintenance. At Santa Ana NWR in Texas last winter I led a team of volunteers building a 120 ft boardwalk and observation deck on the refuge. My wife was volunteering in the visitors center. It was a blast.

As soon as we get the fridge fixed we're headed back to Indiana where the rally was. We found a couple of furniture stores that we're going to unload the kids inheritance at. We love the Amish furniture.

We just returned from a 10 week trip that started in Denver, and went thru Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Canada (BC & Alberta), Montana and South Dakota. It was about 7k miles, and we averaged just over 11 mpg with our Chevy. We traveled with a dual-sport Yamaha 250 on the front of our truck, which we rode 2-up almost 2k miles sightseeing along the way. It was great for parking in crowded national parks, and some of the bigger cities. This was our first big trip since our retirement, and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

you traveled with a yamaha on the front? how did you find this was there any hinderance to air flow? or did you find it blocked your view? I am considering doing the same but would like some feedback also what truck are you using

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes, we put a Yamaha XT250 on a Mototote carrier on the front of our 2013 Silverado 3500 SRW. I got the hitch online, and installed it myself because it just bolted on. My biggest fear was reduced airflow that would cause the truck to overheat. We crossed the Rockies in the US and Canada with only one issue. We were pulling a very long grade (several miles) on our way from Vancouver to Jasper in 92 degree heat, and our temp increased to about 25 degrees above normal (235 vs 210). The gauge goes to 260, so I wasn't overly concerned because it was halfway between normal and overheating. As soon as we hit the top of the hill, the temp came right back to normal. I'm not sure whether we would have experienced the same thing without the motorcycle on the front.

The carrier loads from the driver's side, so the mirrors and handlebars stick up above the hood on the passenger side. I didn't have any issues with blocked view, and my wife said it was minor.

This motorcycle is small and light (280#), and the carrier/hitch is rated at 450#. I'm not sure how a bigger or heavier one would work. We rode 2-up, and it did great at 40-50 mph, but maxed out at about 60, so I wish it had a little more power. Otherwise, it performed flawlessly while being ridden or carried. I have been riding over 40 years on all kinds and sizes of bikes, and this one is just a simple, fun little bike that is easy to take with us.

If you want more info, I would be happy to talk to you directly.

Randy

Were you in the Flathead Valley at all (Kalispell/Whitefish area)?

sounds like everyone had some fantastic trips! must be retired? we stayed close to home this year - this month we did central New York - Turning Stone Resort & Casino (saw a show, a little gaming, great steakhouse there) in Verona, then to East Coast Resort in Parish where we did a day trip to Fort Ontario and a day trip up to Watertown, Sacketts Harbor and Clayton, then to the Catskill area for a few days before returning home and to work. September we will go to Sussex NJ for 2 weekends then heading to Lake George for a week (Hot Air Balloon Festival). That will be it for this year. Hubby retires next year and planning a 3 week trip to Yellowstone in September to celebrate (I'm still working until 2016)....

Loved the Glacier area. !! It is what I expected to see when I thought of MT. Glacier was my favorite place to see this summer followed by Rocky Mtn National Park Colorado then Yellowstone 3rd. Disappointed when we went south from glacier to Missoula then to Dillon. Did not expect to see so much Sage Brush! Not my idea of MT.

That's good to hear Western (esp. NW) Montana a lot different than the rest of the state. Eastern Montana little more than an extension of North Dakota.

Did you take the RV through Yellowstone? If so, just wondering if there were any tight spots as we are thinking of going next summer.

First let me say I thought Columbia Falls was a great town. Got my truck washed there a couple of times and stopped at a meat market ( Perfect Cuts, I think) that was great. We were in the Tetons for a week then went to Big Sky to stay to see friends in Bozeman then back south to W. Yellowstone so we have not taken the trailer thru Yellowstone yet. In our travels it appear crossing Fishing Bridge will be the tightest going east which we will do in order to go to Cody next week. I have seen some big 5th wheelers traveling thru the park. Very few places to park a 5th wheeler in the park.

We left Texas on June 6th and stopped in Ruidoso NM for a few days. Then on to Show Low AZ, Flagstaff AZ (Grand Canyon), Las Vegas NV (too hot), Yosemite, Sacramento CA, Eureka CA, meandered up the Oregon coast to Portland, Seattle WA, Coeur d'Alene ID, Columbia Falls MT (Glacier National Park), Missoula (where we purchased our Redwood), Butte MT, Pocatello ID, now in Heber City UT. Will head from here to Moab UT, Cortez CO, Albuquerque NM, Roswell NM, then back to Texas end of Sept. It's been a great summer!!
