John, If you are serious - look at this one at Sams Club - same thing only it has a LID! that you can latch down so the lava rock doesn't fly around in the back of the truck. At the end of the season, I got this one for $49. We use it more than the little red campfire.

Here is a link to the one we got, nice and compact with a lid. Stows easily in the basement.

Brad, The Redwood fire pit has a carrying bag that zips shut to prevent spillage.

Ah, I didn't see that part.

Now that I have looked at the other pics, what kind of gas cylinder is that at the campfire?

Oh wow - I had heard of aluminum the other day when I complained of how heavy these 40s are, but composite now. I have never seen one. It looks like they have 40s as well. Wonder what the hydrotest or inspection requirements are.

Brad - most composite cylinders, at least the ones we used back in my working days, were a 3-year hydro and max life span of only 15 yrs. The last batch of SCBA bottles we bought had a Transport Canada exemption, so we only had to hydro every 5 yrs, but still max life of 15 yrs.

With such a short life, I wonder what the advantage is? Did you ever have problems with your composite SCBA cracking around the valve neck? We had all of ours recalled (Survivair) because of that, but I don't remember now if they were the 6,000 psi or the 2,200 psi tanks. I know most the guys got a little concerned when they heard that the valves would shoot off.

Brad - we also used the Survivair, but only the low pressure (2215 psi)bottles. Don't recall having issues with them. Went to Scott Air Packs about 5 yrs ago, also with the low pressure carbon wrapped bottles.

The big benefit is weight saving, especially when deep sea we used steel 4500 psi bottles.

Although I have used the composite bottles for years, for propane, I'll stick to regular bottles.

So you did use composite for the LP? Again - I have never seen one until today.

The guys really appreciated the lighter bottles on the back, and didn't complain when we went to the 6,000 lb to get over an hour of air with a guy that was good at pacing himself.

Brad - apologies, as my last post wasn't too clear. I have only used composite on SCBA's and am very comfortable with them.

For propane I'll be staying with regular bottles. They are heavy, but I normally get them filled by the trucks that come around the campground. Little more expensive, but they remove the empty, fill it and put it back. For a few dollars it saves wear and tear on my back.

Thanks Andy.

Sorry John, I steered off out of curiosity for that cylinder in the pic, didn't mean to distract form the fire pit discussion.

Brad, it just wouldn't seem right if the thread didn't stray off course a little bit.

I am not one of the thread police

to me it's a conversation, so no apology necessary once the original answer is addressed - typically learn more by the asides than the original thought !

Oh, and just thought it was nice they named the pit after our coaches !!!
