Travel from NJ to the Rally in Shipshewana IN

I will be in Williamstown NJ for the 2 weeks prior to the Redwood Rally in Shipshewana IN.

Anybody have any tips or suggestions for my travels from NJ to Shipshewana ?

I am going to make it a two day trip, leave NJ on Saturday 7/30 and arrive in Shipshewana on Sunday 7/31 so I also have to find a mid point to overnight on the way.

Williamstown is about an hour from me , that's where my RW dealer is. I would take 42 North , cross the Walt Whitman Bridge into my PA and get on 76 west... Follow 76 west to the PA Turnpike. Get on the PA turnpike and go west... Go through Pittsburgh , 76 and 80 will merge , stay on 80 west through Ohio , into Indiana...

If you want to avoide the PA pike tolls , you can run the North east extension ( 476 ) North to router 80 and then go West,, the NE Extension is tolls , 80 is not, all the trucks run 80 and it is very congested with them..it will be about 13 hours from Williamstown to Shipshewana ,
I can't help with half way , the few trips I made out there was a 1 day run out for me.. This year we are going to MorRyde in June , but will be stopping at one of our office in Berea Ohio first ( Cleveland ) we are staying in Streetsboro Ohio ,which is about 8 hours from Williamstown...

I agree with Joe's suggestion. We come from Baltimore and pick up the PA turnpike in Breezewood, PA. It's pretty easy traveling, though the tolls in Ohio are brutal.

Word of caution: watch your clearance on the PA turnpike, especially on the eastern half. They have these older, curved overpasses that can make your heart skip a beat. Follow the truckers' leads and try to be in the left lane going under some of the older bridges.

One place we have stayed a couple of times and is a good overnight is Fox Den in Donegal PA. This would be your best option as closer to Pittsburgh there really isn't much. Probably would be about 7 hours or so from Williamstown. We're headed to the Rally also but haven't firmed up yet when we are leaving for IN. Our reservations start 8/1 at Shipshewana.

I have traveled the turnpike many times in a big truck... I had a regular run from PA to Pittsburgh in a 48' dry van...
I believe that the only area's that MAY be directly before the tunnels, if so they are clearly marked.. And the nice thing is all RV's are allowed to travel the tunnels with no restrictions..

Two bridges come to mind, both are marked 13'3" in the right lane. My coach is 13'3".
One is just after Breezewood and the other after the last tunnel at Somerset.
I make it a practice to be in the left lane for those !!

Woodland Campground is right off I-80 in PA. Many extralong pull-throughs. We don't even unhook the truck. 50A & full hookups. Leave next morning at 8:30 and get to rally around 3:00.

I would agree with what Joe said as I travelled this route more times than I could count while living in the Republic of New Joisey. Don't know if this is far enough West for you but I'd recommend Dogwood Acres as an overnight possibly.

Let's reopen this thread----

Rob ,

I traveled from SE PA to Streetsboro Ohio yesterday in route to Elkhart... Some points that were discussed earlier -

Low bridges on the PA Pike ??-- there are a FEW overpasses that are marked AS LOW AS 13'1"..BUT THAT IS FOR WHERE THE SIDE WALL MEETS THE CEILING... The arrow is all the way to the right side, and the arch is large...

I made a point to stay behind a few trucks when I saw the sigh to get a feel for the height.. You do not have to leave the right lane... JUST DONT TRY AND PULL OFF THE ROAD UNDER ONE OF THEM!!

Secondly , the Streetsboro Ohio KOA is clean and a good stopping point... It took us about 8 hours , but we left during rush hour on a Tuesday morning.. We also stopped 4 times with one of those being for lunch...
The directions are showing me about 4 hrs/250 miles from Elkhart... This campground has large/long pull through sites... Just make sure you put blocks under the front gear if in hooking or you will go out of stroke !

Thanks for the update, I called that KOA today and changed my reservation from the Saturday night before the Rally (I was planning on arriving in Shipshewana on Sunday 7/31) to Tuesday Night 7/26 so I can be in Shipshewana on Wednesday 7/27.

I called today and now have a scheduled appointment at MorRyde for Thursday 7/28 & Friday 7/29 to go ahead and install the MorRyde IS Suspension on my Redwood prior to the Rally.
As much a I travel year round, I finally am going to take the plunge and get the best suspension installed to go with my new 17.5 tires

You won't regret it at all. Difference in ride and handling is remarkable.
Look forward to seeing you again at the Rally

You are going to want to go to MorRyde for Wednesay night and stay as they start at about 0530 in the morning and will be knocking on your door at 6:30 saying they're ready for you.

The fun part is at the end of the day on the first day when you walk in and the coach is sitting on jack stands and there is nothing under the frame rails .........

That's good, tell me there is a desk and I will be really happy. Actually, I might just go to a hotel for the two days.
