Water Pump Runs Continuously

The water pump runs continuously even when all the water faucets are closed. I thought it might be the pressure switch which is mounted on the end of the pump and changed the switch to a new one. No joy! So I changed the pump out to a new pump (different brand) I carry as a spare. No joy! There is no water leaking from any fitting or line, the flow thru the faucets is ok (always weak flow using the pump), and I removed the water filter cartridge and checked the pump suction strainer (clean). So why can't the system build up the 50 psi pressure to shut off if there are no leaks and the supply is unobstructed? Stumped in Washington!

Fresh water tank drain valve open? Shut-off valve on the inlet side of the fresh water pump in the closed position. Cap on end of winterizing hose in convenience center sucking air?

Check for holes in the winterizing hose. When they screwed the back wall of basement on in mine, they put not one, but two screws through it. Instead of replacing the hose they then proceeded to fix it by cutting the hose at one hole. Then instead of using a splice barbed on both ends, they used one with 1/4 pipe threads on one end, and barbs on the other.

They completely missed the second hole. I found the second one and cut 8-10 inches out of the hose. The pump still wouldn't prime. After a couple more hours of looking, messing and cussing I found the threaded end. It was sucking air past the threads. I had by this time double clamped most of the fittings leading to the pump. It was just stupid what they did.

I'm sure you have already checked, but i will ask anyway. Is the cap on the winterize hose?

Yes. Tight. I'm checking the suction side plumbing today. I'm suspicious of a leak in that tangle of tubing and fittings.

Problem solved. The plastic cap on the anti freeze pick up hose was leaking air into the system. There is no valve in this line so it depends on an air tight seal from the cap. One of the first things I checked was this cap and I screwed it on as tightly as I could. I found the problem when I removed the cap and inserted the antifreeze hose into a jug of fresh water. When the line was trapped under water the pump pressurized the system and then cycled off from the pressure switch. The solution was to insert a rubber washer into the cap and also use teflon tape on the threads. Everything is back to normal.

If I get ambitious I may replace the standard valve in the pump suction line with a three way valve. That way we are not depending on a plastic cap screwed onto the end of a hose for positive closure.

I have to pull that side of the basement in the spring for some other stuff to do and am planning on putting a shutoff valve in that line while I'm in there.

At least it was a simple fix. Now you have a spare pump when one goes bad

When you are in there, replace the screws with velcro. Next time you have to remove the panel, you'll thank your self for the time saved.

Did that a year ago. Used wide band velcro from Home Depot. Makes it much easier and the pump is directly behind the easily removed center panel. Already had a spare pump from last trailer.

Everyone should put a pex shutoff on the winterization tube. It's a $5 fix and several of us have experienced this problem.
