Spur Gears

Well we did it this morning pulling the slides in to move. Stripped the teeth off the Spur Gear in the follower assemble. With Ann working the switch and me pushing on the rear corner of the Living/Dining Slide we got it in so we could move. Closed the valve on that slide for now as although it makes it tight, we can still make do until I can get replacement parts once we reach our Winter location 01 Nov.

You need to count the teeth on the spur gear before replacing. The older units had 18 teeth on the gear and the newer models have 15 teeth on the gear. Apparently at some point in time Lippert decided the 18 tooth gears had too little metal in the teeth and decided to beef them up by going with 15 tooth gears. Also check the rack when replacing the gears. When my unit failed some of the teeth from the spur gear lodged in the rack and I had to use a hammer and chisel to drive them out of the rack.

Researching, it looks like the 18 tooth was the early design up to approx 2013, but I will count prior to ordering anything. I also want to see what Lippert has to say, since they offer and OEM replacement Gear Pack and a Heavy Duty. The HD is approx double the price, but if it's really heavy duty might be worth the extra cost.

Keep us posted on what you decide to do. Also, it may be nice to see a PIC or two when you do the replacement...

It won't be until Nov before I dig into it. We've got two weeks 1/2 mile from the Beach on Sanibel Island, Florida before getting to a Winter spot in Sebring, Florida.
Once we get there, we'll push the slide out so I can get under and see how much damage has been done.

Both spur gears failed on our kitchen slide two years ago. We now travel with two spare gears just in case. It is necessary to jack the slide up to take the weight off of the gears before removing and replacing. I used wooden blocks and a hydraulic jack.

Here is a link to repair the through frame slide out mechanisms, which includes information on the gear packs, different number of teeth etc.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I've already down loaded the manual and service info from the Lippert site. And from the info I read the different tooth count changed approx 2013, but I will count teeth before ordering anything.
As I mentioned we're not changing plans for the next two weeks and once we reach our Winter Park I'll have plenty of time and help if I need it.

Quick question about the gears. I have 18 tooth gears now. Should I replace them with 18 tooth, or get the 15 tooth since it sounds like they are a little stronger? I wasn't sure on compatibility with the existing teeth on the slide rail. Thanks for the help.

The 15 tooth gears will not work with the rack gears on the bars that extend the slides. Both of my spur gears failed on the kitchen slide a couple of years ago and I had to replace them on the road. Best to keep a set of spares in the coach in case you get stranded. It is not practical to replace the rack gears to accommodate the 15 tooth spur gears.
