Opinions: Generator or Gen Prep and 2 Honda 2000s?

All depends on your needs and wants. We've sold our 2 Hondas and opt'd for the Factory installed generator. The Hondas worked great, just a PITA to drag out, hook them together, then when done have to let them cool before packing away. Plus while in use they need to be anchored to something to prevent them from growing feet and walking off. My opinion: If I were going to continue with the Hondas, I wouldn't order the Gen Prep because you loose a lot of storage space when they put in that generator box. And just connect the Hondas to the normal AC cable.

If you have 2 ac's and want to run both at the same time you will need the onan. If you want to run an ac andthe microwave will need the onan. If youare dry camping and only need to charge your batteries use the hondas but in the long run If eel the factory gen package is the way to go. Just my opinion.

No gasoline to haul and smell either.
Two Honda 2000s don't equal 1 ONAN 5500.

Just press "Start" and "Stop". That's the extent of your involvement...

We really wanted the Onan 5500 but couldn't justify the added expense. Two days before we were to pick up our trailer the salesman called to inform us that a customer that had ordered a 5500 decided he wanted the 6500 instead. I guess he wanted the option to run everything in the unit at the same time.
Anyway, we got the 5500 lp generator for dealer cost plus installation.

They don't the dealer that made that deal made a good profit. They sold the 6500 for list and ordered the 5500 from the factory with the trailer deal then when it arrived they replaced the 5500 with the 6500 (they are the same size and bolt pattern same exaust its a direct replacement) then sold the 5500 at a reduced price plus the install and whala they made good money and satisfied everyone. So don't kid yourself the dealers won't do anything unless there is a profit any profit.

Your right. there not kidding anyone. I remember many years ago, a saying on the bathroom wall, in a auto dealership. "nothing worse on a woman than a salesman"

Thanks all for your input. It looks like the factory Gen is required if you want fully functional dry camping.

I thought about it when we were first contemplating our order, but for our useage the 5500 is fine and a little bit (not much) better fuel efficient. It's head and shoulders about our previous dual Honda 2000s.

I have the factory 5500 and haven't had any problems at all with power. This past summer I ran both a/c units at the same time without any issues at all. I did have to take mine in for some minor work and the Onan rep said the only problem he has ever seen with these units was from the lack of use. He recommended 2 hours of use under full load each month to keep them healthy.
