Dishwasher Drain

For those with the dishwasher, does it drain up to the P-trap in the sink above or does it go down into the belly? I'm wanting to install one but unsure if it can drain up above the height of the dishwasher.

Brad

I installed ours and the drain line connects to a Y fitting in the vertical drain behind the spice cabinet. It had a knockout plug in it from the factory that I had to remove without it falling down into the tank, but I did it.

I can confirm the Y in the vertical section of the drain line, because we don't have the Dish Washer, BUT RW installed the Y with the "Knockout" missing and we filled the Galley Tank one day and had a minor flood under the Island Counter because of water coming out of that Y.
And Brad, remember these RWs don't have "P Traps" just those Hepvo Waterless Traps

Thanks Jim and Michelle & Ann! I couldn't remember and you are right, no P-trap. I may not be able to do what I want, as it may be too high up to drain.

I don't know about the new Redwoods, but my 2012 36RL has a hepvo for the galley drain, and P-Traps for the Lav sink, Shower drain and my Washing machine drain in the bedroom slide out. Just like home dishwasher installations, Fisher Paykel dishwashers require the use of a high loop in the dishwasher drain line. Simply loop it to the counter-top height and secure the drain line with a zip tie to a cleat just under the counter-top.

Thanks Chris, I do remember seeing the high loop, but I never paid attention to where it actually connected to the drain.

Brad, IIRC there is a auto vent or mechanical vent on the top of the plumbing, tail piece type Wye fitting with the dishwasher drain on it and then the hepvo then to the tank. I will have to pull our spice rack out to take a picture next time we get in the RW.

Brad, Finally got around to removing the spice rack drawer. Pictures show how I used the provided bend support to keep the hose up high as possible without the hose kinking. Tail piece for dishwasher drain is below the Hepvo valve entering the drain pipe directly into the galley tank.

Super thanks Chris! I've downloaded these and now I need to try to find that fitting you show where the drain connects. It looks like it was specifically made for that purpose.

I'm trying to figure out if the drain can be higher than the top of the dishwasher. I suppose with that loop all the way up to the deck, I probably should be able to have the drain higher, but I guess I should check the Fisher Paykal manual as well.

Brad, It appears to be a dishwasher made fitting. The end had a piece glued into it, like a cap. I had to use progressively larger drill bits to open the hole to allow the water to drain through the fitting. I believe on Michelle's fitting in their RW, the hole was open and there was no cap or covering over it. Weird.

Brad

I also installed the Fisher/Paykel dishwasher in our Redwood. The Y fitting had a solid plug in the smaller angled part of the fitting that had to be drilled out to allow the dishwasher drain to flow down into the waste water tank. I was careful to vacuum at the same time as I drilled to keep as many shavings out of the tank as possible. It's been working for over 4 years with no problems.

Because our model MH never had the DW option, I'm afraid I won't get that lucky, but I'm OK rebuilding all of that part to put in a new piece. I had just not seen one before.

one more thing to do on your winterizing list is to put 1~2 qts of antifreeze in the dish washer and pump it out as stated in the owners manual.

What we found on our Redwood dishwasher that was once I got the antifreeze in the sink and icemaker completed, I could set the dishwasher to the short cycle while pumping antifreeze and it would winterize itself in 11 minutes while I was working other parts of the rig such as the wash machine. By running both the dishwasher and washer from the water source, it ensured antifreeze in both the supply and drain system. Typically those were the two I saved until last.
