Spindrift, I was at the navy yard last week having lunch in cafeteria down by water and could see her. It is a damn shame we allow them to deteriorate like that, that ship worked hard for this country for 50 years, breaks what's left of my heart to see her in that condition.

We travel to Alberta all the time to see our grand kids. Alberta for you guys who live in that little country between us and Mexico, is what I would call a cross from Texas oil and Montana Ranching. 10 years ago most of the 1/2 tons were Fords also the work trucks, 1 ton diesels were Fords now when I look around 50 50 Ford and Ram 1/2 tons and 80% of the work trucks are Ram 18% GMC/Chevy and the rest Fords. Ford took a huge hit with their problematic diesel engines, however they are on a slow comeback. I wonder what we will see in another 10 years, maybe even a Tesla truck or even a real Toyota work truck with something like a Hino diesel. There is a very solid rumor of a V8 Cummins for that "other" truck Nissan

My son bought a used Ford Excursion 4 years ago with the 6.0, that is the biggest POS any manufacturer ever put under a hood. His maintenance cost was between $12-15k in a couple of years, 3 sets of head gaskets, 1 turbo, & 10 injectors & still couldn't get out town without getting stranded. Finally told the bank to come get it & they had to load it on a truck to haul it off. He now knows what not to buy.

Also Ford has to remove the cab to work on the engine, so once the warranty runs out labor cost is exorbitant to access the engine before the work can even begin.

Uh oh, folks are beating the chest again

There are good aspects to GM - too bad the bow tie didn't go down when it should have and Ford and Dodge could have picked up some of that expertise from the unemployment line.

for every "how bad a mfg is" story,
there are just as many how good they are stories,
some of them posted by their competitor too

IMHO a used vehicle is no longer the mfg's deal

4 years ago would have been about 2010, so the excursion was at least 5 years old by then and probably well over 100K miles of who knows how much abuse ?!?

I had three diesels excursions - two of them that HORRIBLE 6.0 --- and all three of them tuned to get a little boost - well known issue if you tune them too much, you were asking for problems if you didn't change out the head bolts which were designed to stretch under too much pressure...(maybe the first limit put on to stop tuning ?!? )

ONLY reason I got out of each one was to trade up to a newer one and the last one to get into the f350...

really miss being able to haul 8 people around AND their luggage AND a trailer

I think the f350 trucks made 2011 to present are as good as or better than GM and Dodge. The fact of the matter is there is no way to prove who is better. The public is voting with their money and Ford and Dodge are gaining market share on Gm. Look at what the big fleets are buying. They know and analyze cost, repair and resale data and make an informed decision. Their board members and stock holders don't care about brand; only bottom line. I'm not saying GM's are bad; I am saying all of the trucks are pretty good at present time. I manage a Aamco transmission shop and have my ear pretty close to the ground and I am going to buy a new truck soon with no trade. Based on what I know and have researched it is between Ford and Ram for me. I am an old 70ies GM muscle car owner. I don't have blinders on. THERE, NOW YOU HAVE MY "RANT." ENOUGH SAID>!>!!!!

As of 2011, you don't have to remove the cab of the truck to do the engine work. That was pre-6.7 (international diesel).

I've worked on many 6.0Ls. I'm sorry to say your son was using an individual masquerading as a mechanic. Point of fact, the value of 6.0Ls is climbing because any good shop knows what needs to be done to them to make them reliable. One of the fastest, if you're into that kind of thing, diesel trucks on the street today.

TT...it's a real shame that your son's experience put a bad taste in your mouth for Ford. Unfortunately, experiences such as yours often lead to discussions such as this. In any event, I'm glad you found a truck that likes your backside. Cheers!

We all have our own experiences and opinions about our trucks...... although everything on this has been friendly....I'm fearful it could get heated. We're all fellow RVers and we're all on here for information and help.

Make sure we all stay friendly

I had 80,000 miles on my 6.0 and it did great. Just saying they weren't all bad.

So far I'm happy but who knows what the next truck will have on the grill. I've seriously talked about a Medium Duty.

Man, it is still snowing !!!!
Anyway, I have had a Chevy since the 70's, recently a couple of dually's. One was a 454 that could not carry our Everest over Monarch Pass without passing out. The most recent Duramax that I loved, but started to nickel and dime.

Jumped on a 2014 Ram and not only was blown away with the interior and the "luxury", but the performance on her maiden voyage of 2200 miles with the RW. Can't speak for the longevity of this beast, but I would not trade it in for anything at this point.

Can you BELIEVE THIS! It has gone from sunshine to total whiteout here at least 3 times since being in the office today!. Kicked off branches all day yesterday and today, cleared the driveway 3 times.....

I cancelled all our plans at the lake for Mothers Day when I saw the weather report - We had picnic plans with a couple of 5ers and couple of campers and over 20 people.
