Water Softener

Has anyone installed a water softener in their basement?

I have a full coach reverse osmosis in mine. Can't imagine a water softener would be any more difficult.

We have a softener but it not installed in the basement. I keep it outside under the overhang. Reason being is for the recharge. I think it would be difficult to recharge it if mounted.

We currently have our softener set up in an insulated box, but soon will be travelling, so I thought it wold be good to mount it inside. I think I can make it work in the basement, but the plumbing will be interesting to allow regenerating and back-flushing. When I get the plumbing figured out, I'll post a drawing in case anyone else wants to do it.

Too much crap in my basement & wouldn't want it behind the wall as so far I can't recharge it without making a mess. I mounted mine in a box along with another filter into softener & can't imagine not having the softener.

Like you, I can't live with it here in the Hill Country.

My insulated box has the softener and a filter in it. My hoses have heat tape and insulation over that. I am currently keeping the box warm with an incandescent light bulb, which are getting harder to find.

This is part of why I went the RO route. While it technically doesn't soften the water it produces a much cleaner water and requires very little maintenance once installed. I just change out the two prefilters every 6 months and the charcoal filter once a year. Can do all of this from the OEM filter hatch.

I let mine outside and wrap with heat tape and a small moving blanket then cover with trash bag

I use a On The Go, double from that I purchased from the RV water filter store. We spend some time in the south west (mostly Arizona) where the water is hard. The filter is outside. I use quick disconnects.

That's where I got all the bits for my reverse osmosis system. Am definitely a fan.
