Water Heater - Electric Ops

Worked great last week. Does not heat water on electricity this week. Switch lights up. Breaker is not tripped (yes I turned it off and back on). Any ideas?

Why are there two reset buttons on the water heater?

One is 12 volt thermostat the other 120 volt. Remove that black cover on the resets to check that wires aren't shorted against the tank due to that cover mashing them, I had to trim the cover about a 1/4" , fold down metal lip & replace the 120 thermostat.

This should be a standard check/repair for everyone. Don't know if this design flaw was corrected in newer models.

Yes. Most often its burned out thermostat. If still good, then might be orange wire from the switch on monitor panel fell out of the connector on wire bundle zip-tied to top of water heater. It's reachable (barely) by taking down basement wall.

The water heater thermostat failed on our 2012 36RL during our second year of ownership. If you have a multi-meter, you can use the meter in to measure the thermostat contact resistance (should be essentially zero ohms when cold). Turn off the power source to water heater. If I remember correctly, the thermostats are behind an approx. 3 x 4 inch, black plastic cover. Mine had some damage to the wire insulation when I removed the cover.

There are two thermostats........one for the 120 VAC side and one for the 12 VDC LP control side.

I was able to purchase replacement parts from a local Camping World. Refer to your water heater manual for part numbers. I now carry spare parts, but, have never had a problem since the original instance.

Hope this helps.

If that doesn't work and you can get to your water heater check the electrical junction box at the top left hand corner of the water heater, wire nuts may be loose, that was what was wrong with ours. Good luck
