Truck

Its me again! Getting ready to purchase a 2019 3961 RK Redwood and was curious what other Redwood owners tow with and why? We are considering either the Ford 350 dually or 450 dually. We are Ford people but opened to others opinion. Thank you in advance

I tow my 2016 39mb with a 1998 international. I prefer the larger truck because of it weight and stopping power. it has a lot more room in the front between me and the dash so I can stretch my legs out for the long hauls. its not too bad on MPG I get 11 MPG.

HAHA! Thank you. Yes we are Ford people because the Chevy truck was pure headaches from day 1 and friends with Dodges only complain about owing power so I ran scared and stayed with Ford. Never had problem 1 and we have towed RVs, boats, and heavy loads. But we still like to see what everyone uses. Thanks again

Our previous setup was a 2010 F250 with airbags which did great. We towed a 33' Artic Fox, 44' Raptor and 38' Gateway with this truck. Probably was overweight with the Raptor but it still did great. We upgraded this year to a 2018 F350 SRW knowing we were getting a heavier 5th wheel. Our first tow I thought, went pretty good. We are usually in one spot for 8 months to two years so having a dually wasn't really for us right now. I think if we traveled more I would prefer a F450.

I pull a 2012 36rl with a 2017 F350 DRW. On the interstates I run around 70 mph on the two lanes I run around 60 mph. My previous truck was a 2012 F350 DRW with 3:73 gears this truck has 4:10 gears. Fuel milage is 9 1/2 - 10 1/2 pulling, empty around 15. I dont really see the need for an F450. I do prefer the 4:10 gear over the 3:73, pulling the mpg is about the same about 1mpg less when empty

Just double check the numbers on 350 vs 450, because the 450 is a heavier truck it actually has less pin weight capacity. Pretty much most on here are using Duallies of the Big Three.

You may want to check the turning radius of the 350 vs 450. I believe the F450 has a better turning radius. I certainly wish my Ram had a better turning radius!

We custom ordered our 2017 Ford F450 Super Duty Lariat with the RV tow pkg to pull a 2018 3991RD Redwood. Towing we get 11-12 mpg. Not towing we average 16 mpg. Truck handles RV easily. Really like the short turning radius and retractable/folding mirrors when not towing We stay in the 60-62 mph range currently until we replace the factory issued tires. Very happy with truck performance.

I was referring to the RV tires in previous post. Not the truck tires!

I chose an F450 for a few reasons. Most importantly, it has a 9.5 foot shorter turning radius. In 2014, it sat almost 2” lower and had a much softer ride, unloaded. Michelle is correcting that it has a lower payload capacity, however it’s adequate. Only downside it that the only rear end that was available was a 4:30. My F350 got better fuel economy with the lighter rear end, but I really wanted the better mauverability.

We tow our 36rl with a 2008 f-350 xlt 4x4 dually and we are pretty happy with the performance. Wish we got a little better mpg. We do have the crew cab so the dogs have their own seat in the back to roam. Deb

Towing Truck

We pull our 2013 36FL with a 2016 F350 Dually. (6.7 Diesel) I put air bags on the truck to level it up while pulling. It pulls with no problems.

We pull our 38GK with an 2011 F450 and you do not know it is there except for the odd shut sensation. Also the F450 has a much smaller turning radius, much like a motor home.

We have a 2016 F350 Lariat DRW pulling a 2014 RW31SL. 12 mpg towing and 1-2 better not towing.

I tow with my 2013 RAM Cummins with the AISIN trany, DRW 4wd. On my way from Maine to pickup 36RL from Keystone, I averaged 19.2 mph at 70 mph. On the way back loaded, we did 11.4. As far as eastern states go, PA is pretty hilly. On flat ground, I averaged just over 20 mph (20.2)

Guess I'll weigh in on this too. We had a 2011 SRW Lariat CC, short box Diesel F-350 with a 3:55 rear end that pulled everyone of our 5th's without effort. I averaged about 11.5 mpg, towing. I installed a Pull-Rite Glider hitch that's been worth every dollar. Loved the truck, nothing wrong with it except I was looking for more hi-tech safety stuff, larger more intuitive navigation display and wanted LED lights as well. Voila, just found a brand new left over 2017 SRW Platinum CC, short box Diesel F-350 with a 3:55 rear end, with tons of rebates at the right price, even has massaging seats and longer wheel base this year, so ride has improved. It's beautiful and perfect in every way. Besides towing the RW, I use my SRW truck for a number of other multiple tasks where I don't want to be concerned about the restriction limits as to where one can park or drive, as you would with a DRW. It's been said that the top 3 (GM, Dodge, and Ford) are very similar today, because they share many of the same sub manufacturing companies for components, so it's more of a personal choice, rather than one manufacturer being any better than the other. The new F-series trucks have features, ergonomics, power and creature comforts, that are all well suited for long distant travel. In your case, I'd stick with the Ford lineup, because you've been raised on Fords and there are natural biased tendencies, whether you admit it or not.
