Trail Air air pressure

I have the Trail Air pin box on my RW. I have read on other posts that some owners are using different air pressures in the air bag. I have noticed that if I don't inflate the air bag to the recommended level with the arrows on the decal my hitch plate is not level. But the ride is not nearly as harsh with less air. My question is, if the hitch plate is not level will that put more stress on the hitch and the pin box? I am using a Super Glide hitch. Lining up the arrows makes it feel like the trailer is bouncing off of the truck when I hit the infamous bridge joints.

I have a B&W hitch & run 70-72 psi in mine & don't pay any attention to the arrows, if I air it up to the arrows it's way to stiff for my liking. I don't think the hitch plate being level is mandatory or they would've designed the TG to set level at any pressure. Sounds like you've already found your sweet spot so I'd stick with or just experiment til you happy.

I thank you for the reply. I know that the ride is much more pleasurable with less air in it. One more quick question. I was looking at the pin box this evening and noticed I can move the lower plate on the pin box with my hand backwards and forwards on the right side, no movement on the left. Should I be able to do that? Thanks again.

We all went thru this at one time or another
re your air pressure, adjust it to your liking and the conditions...
re the lower plates movement, yes it should move, but many came without grease, and it would BANG forward and back with each change in direction....it should have grease to dampen the movement...

IIRC, i used this axle grease from amazon..
and remember to lube both outside AND inside the hitch...

Thanks Spindrift - tried to recall how many there were but it's been a while
do recall having to do some odd gyrations to get to them all - and thankful to have had a flexible extension on the grease gun !

I southern engineered the flexible hose along with the 6-8" metal pipe with a couple kinks in it to reach into the hitch & still be able to keep it pushed on the zerks, work pretty good. As for those up in the hitch, what a horrible design, now since some of glide plates are failing I guess it was.

I replaced our with the new lower jaw because of the slamming back and forth. I was concerned about the ride with this change but we have not noticed any difference except the slamming. Very happy with the change and Lippert provided the replacement jaw at no cost. I our back inflated to just below the arrow about 1/4" and this seems to be the best ride bag is at 65psi for that position.

Thanks for the replies. I looked around the tubes inside the hitch and I can see where it has grease around the ends so it probably was greased, but that doesn't really mean they used enough. Grease is cheap and it don't hurt anything if you use too much.

I kept mine around 80 psi, but my pin weight was 4380 lbs with water!

Put a compressor in there, and an Air Lift Wireless One controller and you can control the pin box from the cab! Change it as you wish from the road!
