Tires....

I know this has been discussed a thousand times here but help me out. We are going to be in our Redwood full time starting in August. I plan on replacing the tires either before or shortly after that. We've only put around 2500 miles on the current tires plus how ever many miles were put on them from the factory to dealer. They still look great but I just don't trust them.

I suppose the easiest switch is to put the Goodyear G's on. We've had them on our previous unit and towed nearly coast to coast including time in the southwest during the summer with absolutely no problems at all. Are they a good choice ? If we decided to go with the H tires, what brand do you reccomend ? Rims ? And will this work on a 2015 38RL ?

Thanks in advance.

We upgraded from the GY G614s to the GY 114s "H" tires and 17.5 Rims on our 2012 36RL. Ordered the tire/wheel combo mounted and balanced from Trailer Tires and Wheels in Ohio.
We ordered our 2016 39MB with the GY 144s right from the factory.
While the 614s are an excellent tire some of these RWs are heavy and once loaded for Full Time travel your pushing the limits of the 614s. Also you would need to check and see if your current rims are even rated to handle the 614s. A few other members have found that they would need to upgrade their rims also, so the logical move was to go to the 17.5 rims and H tires.

Reach out to Ron ( Titan Guy ) . . He has a tire special that I think will blow your mind , , **** OR buy Shane's slightly used G614's****

You can get G rated G614's . . .OR H Rated G114's complete packages..
Your gonna spend $1300.00 or so on 4 tires only . . I would take that $1300.00 and put it towards the $2150 for the Goodyear H complete package... its only $800.00 more for a much better tire choice..

Here was a post by Ron about a month ago...

"The Sailun is $1400, Goodyear $2150 including freight.
4 - 215/75R17.5 H tires, wheels, center caps & lug nuts.
The Sailun seems to be a quality product. There are no/few negative comments on the forums. They are a truck tire company. I am comfortable recommending Sailun. "

^^^^^^^^^^

Doing some research on the Sailun's, I can't really find any complaints on them which is encouraging so they may be something I want to look at doing. Obviously the tire/wheel combination will work on my 38RL, do they look as nice on as the factory installed wheels ?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... I could say yes... some may argue... Reach out to Ron.. he will show you what they look like.. OR Search his post on here , at 1 point he posted a picture of the sets...

My ONLY CONCERN with the Sailun would be customer service... We all know how well Goodyear responds to tire issues , that has spoiled us. With the Sailun being fairly new to market in this size , there has not been any track record of failures and response by the company..

On Edit - If I did this correct , here is a link to the original post.. I do believe the cost is a wee bit higher now , possibly a couple hundred at most -

I agree with all the comments above

I just upgraded to the Goodyear 17.5s from Ron

Excellent tire and wheel package, most people that have seen my new rims like them better than the 16 Inch Rims that came on my 2014 Redwood

I ran the Sailun S637 Tire on my previous 5th Wheel for many miles of trouble free service.
They are a very heavyweight commercial tire and are well constructed, I would have no problem or concern about buying another set of Sailun tires.

In the event of a failure, they do not have the reimbursement coverage that Goodyear provides, I could have saved money this time and gone with the Sailun Tires but decided to go with the American made Goodyear Tires

We are also going to change out our wheel and tires on our 39MB for the 17.5 Goodyear's later this summer. I too like the comfort of the warranty. Our tires hit max load really fast with the 16" G614's so this is the best solution and Ron has the best price for the wheel and tire set.

I have spoken to Ron numerous times over the past months trying to figure out what I want to do to my tires / brakes and over all suspension. He has the experience. He has actually talked me out of doing some of the upgrades I was thinking about doing. You have to take appreciate and trust a person who "just doesn't want to take your money". If i was you give Ron a call. He won't sell you something you don't need.

When I took possession of my unit, it had a set of Towmaster or something similar installed. I had the dealer replace with Goodyear G-114 17.5. They really are the best, just not the cheapest.

I just put New rims and Sailun 17.5 inch tires on my 2012 Redwood 36RE. What psi are you running in your 17.5 inch Sailun tires?&

Off topic, what kind of fuel milage are you getting on your Ram. I have the same model and gear ratio, I hover around 14 without the trailer, about 9 to 10 with.

We run very heavy so I run the max 125 PSI in mine. Did the same with the previous GY G114s.
For people being honest mileage pulling a RW will average 9 to 10 sometime mid 11s if flat and no head win. Follow some other forums and you'll see some trying to claim 14 & 15, but I don't believe it.
I've been averaging 10 with three Duramax, '05, 11, & now '18 with 2 TT and 3 5ers.

My 2011 RAM fuel mileage has always been in the range of 8.5 to 11.5 mpg while towing at 60 mph depending on terrain and wind. When not towing at 60 mph, it will be in the range of 17 to 19 mpg. But, overall when not towing, it will be in the range of 14 to 16 mpg.

I ran the Sailun 17.5" at 125 as printed on the sidewall for max load. If upgrading to heavier load range tires then running lower pressure might have just as well stayed with the lesser tire.
From experience & visiting with friends with different brands of trucks 8.5 to 11 mpg will be about average regardless of truck brand. I'm sure if watching the LIE o METER constantly some, as well as you, may see an occasional 14-15 mpg with a tail wind going downhill, but their average nor yours will be consistently anywhere near that towing any of the RW models.

you can expect any where between 6.5~11 mpg depending on hills , head winds , driver. Having said that here on the east coast I see typically around 9 mpg with the redwood and about 11~13 with the enclosed v nose 18' trailer. The redwood I stay right around 70 mph in the center lane so I am sure those that run 60~65 will see better fuel economy.

I have done a 17.5" tire and wheel upgrade and run them at 120 psi. I have Sailun 637 tires with Alcoa wheels.

A little off topic but our 2018 RAM Cummins with Aisin Transmission / 4.10 axle ratio just turned over 100,000 miles on our trip up to our place in the Georgia Mountains last weekend.
Our RAM has been a awesome truck, coming from owning several Duramax Trucks I was a little unsure about making the switch to RAM but in our 3 1/2 years of ownership since new, we have had absolutely 0 warranty problems with our RAM and it has been a awesome tow vehicle.
Our Fuel Mileage towing our Redwood is approximately 10 to 11 mpg, we keep our speed at about 68 mph when highway traveling.
As far as our Sailun 17.5" tires I recently installed on our Redwood due to the age and excessive wear on our Goodyear G114s due to a alignment issues with our MoRyde IS that was corrected at MoRyde.
I run our Saliuns at 105 to 110 psi based on our load of approximately 18,000 lbs. as per the Sailun tire chart.
Now starting to shop of new tires for our RAM as our current Michelins tread depth is getting pretty low and we are approaching 80,000 miles on them. (only problem we ever had with our RAM was not with the truck but the factory installed Nexen Tires had some problems at a little over 20,000 miles)

Your story on Nexen tires on Ram trucks isn't a one of kind story if your towing heavy.
