Tappan Zee Bridge

Quote - "A crane accident has closed the Tappan Zee Bridge "indefinitely". Drivers are urged to avoid the area and to seek alternate routes. There was no definition given for "indefinitely" but the accident was serious enough that they must check the integrity of the bridge. Five people were seriously injured in the collapse of the crane."

Looks like traffic just got a whole lot worse around NY....

Ugh... I have to go to DC from CT Saturday AM. That only leaves GW and Newburgh to get across... Have to check the maps again.

I'm sure it will reopen for our trip in September and was thinking of trying 84 out of CT. to 684 to 287 all the way to 95 south.
Even though we have headed South for many years I always look for a better Rt. if possible since 95 is horrible in CT. and NY.

The past few years I have used 84 to 81 to 66 to 17 and then back on 95 near Fredericksburg VA. This way adds about 2 hours to the trip instead of using 95 out of CT with no traffic.

Any thoughts or suggestions other then these Rt's that are RW friendly?

Steve

Yesterday I had a choice of 287 and the Tap... OR the GW . . I chose the GW because of timing 11:00-11:30AM... WRONG - It took us 3 hrs to move 4 miles . . It was the last 4 miles before the bridge... It was a nightmare !!! NEVER AGAIN will I take that god forsaken route....

Steve , when going to Indiana , I would stay on that wonderful rt 84 west... take it to 81 south in PA then 80 west... GET the heck out of that area as fast as you can

when going south.. You really cant beat 87-287-95..Delaware Memorial Bridge.. OR 84-81-77-26-95.. only traffic will be around Scranton PA... possibly around the Carsile area.. Possibly Charlotte and Columbia

Indiana is easy and really only one way there from here and I go the way you said every time.

Is there a 26 or did you mean 66?

Yes ,26... Take 81 south to 77.. Take 77 through Charlotte and continue towards Columbia SC.. Just as you hit Columbia , jump onto 26 east. That will dump you onto 95 around 86 miles north of Georgia..
Every year when I do my Richmond office - Charlotte office-vacation... I take that route to Florida...

Steve, another way is when you go around Baltimore on 495 /east Key Bridge, take 97 south and then get on Maryland 3 which will feed you into 301. Take 301 all the way down to Richmond and avoid the DC-Frederiicksburg mess. A little bit of stop lights and busy 4 lane but opens up just south of Annapolis and beautiful, uncontested 4 lane from there to Richmond.

Make sure you get fuel before leaving the Annapolis area. Not much to be found till you hit Richmond.
