Right now I run twin eu2000's with a marine 5 gallon extended run tank... I too get great run times, but the knock is that I can only run 1 AC... And there are times that the 1 is just not enough.....

My wife has said that she would love to have the ability to pull into a rest stop , fire up the genny and spend the night....we are not doing that if I have to set up the twins...

I don't know , not sure the juice is worth the squeeze??? For the amount of dry camping we do .......

I know, its a lot of coin for that convenience. To be honest, my 5500 LP is 12 years old and has stayed with me through 3 5th wheels so when I look at it like that, its been a worthwhile investment and we swallowed the $4,000 or so it cost in 2003 a long time ago. Thank goodness the install has been plug and play each time because all 5ers cater to that model. Something to think about if you are sure you'll stay with a 5er for a while. I don't even think they make my Marquis Gold anymore.

We didn't dry camp but we did use our generator at rest areas where we would sometimes pull in and sleep for 6 or 8 hours.

With the MH we dry camp a lot.

The Onan Diesel is 6000w and in the same case and setup as the gas one. Weighs about 75 lbs more, uses less fuel and is quieter. If I ever replace this RW , the next coach will have one with a 20 gal tank. Would give about 36 hours of full output runtime.

To me that would make sense, especially combined with aux fuel tanks on the truck. But if nobody is doing this, my question would be if I am missing something that would make this a bad idea?

Scott - biggest thing is cost and the need to have a separate fuel tank for it. Second would be it is about 100 lbs heavier. Cost, depending where you buy it, is upper $7k.

It would allow you to run the genset pretty much anytime you wanted going down the road to pre-cool or heat the coach and keep all the 120volt stuff going .

Tried to put a link here but couldn't convince my iPad to do it. Lol

Right now you would have to be creative and build it in yourself. There is more than enough room above the genset enclosure to make a mount and install a 14 gallon tank or you could go under the coach somewhere. The diesel has a fuel pump.

Always missed the ability to fire up the gen in our 38gk to cool it down before getting to the campground...
Usually took HOURS in the texas sun to cool it down !

Really convenient with the onan 10K diesel genset in the Monaco to push a button and have EVERYTHING on!
Don't even know how much fuel it goes through but when it's 105 (or 25 like this weekend!) it's worth every drop of fuel !

I do that with my LP all the time, even used to have a remote start from the cab. Why is that an advantage of diesel?

As far as adding an additional 75 lbs of generator weight + the weight of 20 gal diesel and the tank, why not just go to a horizontal ASME LP tank like a motorhome and stay with the clean operation of LP?

Just the bigger tank and not as volatile a fuel. None other. If I had the propane installed, I wouldn't change it just for that. But for a really nice boondocking setup I think the diesel would be hard to beat.

We boondock quite often and since gasoline is easier to find than LP, I went with the Onan 5500 gas model. All gasoline is stored in the bed of the truck.

Tom ~ does the gas 5500 have a built in tank or do you need an outside tank like a marine outboard tank and a fuel pump?

Vaughn...I use a marine outboard tank for the main and it sits on top of the generator. The gas model comes equipped with its own fuel pump. The combination of gravity and an electric pump makes for a good fuel supply.

Do you shut it down to refill?? or do you use a funnel to fill inside the compartment without shutting down ?

I have a hose long enough to allow me to remove the tank from the genny compartment, while the unit is running, and fill using one of my Gerry cans.

Thanks Tom ,

That's good to know , as I already have the 5 gallon marine tank being used as my extended run tank with the twin Honda's..

This may be a direction that I go!

Brad,
I think there is some issues with how much propane you can carry and tunnels. With Diesel, I could easily set up the truck to carry extra fuel.

I think gas is a second option, but since the truck doesn't run on it, how do you need to carry and use before it goes bad. With diesel, you can always use it.

But for me, I think the issue is mute at this point after looking up the prices.7-10k. Not sure if I would get the use out of it. At that price, I would enjoy better furniture.

Since gasoline is a very unstable product, it begins losing its octane rating almost immediately. It's absolutely essential to use a product such as STA-BIL for any medium or long term storage of gas. Diesel isn't all that much better as any water in the fuel and tank will promote the formation of algae. It all comes down to proper storage and treatment in order to be able to store either fuel for an extended period of time.
