Michael, was that a towable?

I always assumed that towables were 110/LP, but truck campers and motorhomes were 110/12/LP. You may have broken my theory

It's my understanding that they discontinued 12 volt for the fridge some time ago.
I had a couple different units that had 12v for the fridge, and boy they could drain the battery in no time.

It was a Holiday Rambler 5th Wheel. You would only use the 12v mode during towing which eliminated the fuel stop issue of running it on LP - which makes me nervous conceptionally.

Many years ago we had one that was a 3 way, 110. 12V, & gas, but none of ours since then have had the 12V. I think the fridges got to0 big for the 12V power, and if they did, they could run down your battery in no time. Some of the pickup campers with the small fridge may still have them.

It's my understanding that all of the modern fridges like Dometic and Norcold need 12v power for the control circuit when running on propane.

They use 12v. for the light, control panel and circuit board but not to heat the ammonia solution which is what an absorbent refrigerator uses instead of a compressor and Freon.

Now camping at Toledo Bend, made it fine on propane for the refrig and on shore power now for 8 days of camping.

We generally fuel up at the major Truck Stops and figure the Fridge is quite a ways back from the pumps and Diesel isn't anywhere as explosive as Gas, so I don't worry about it at all. When we had our TT and a Gas TV, yep we would stop before pulling up to the pumps and turn the Fridge off, Gas up, then pull away from the pumps and turn the Fridge back on. PITA to say the least.

I will say when I get ready to leave and kill power at the pedestal, that fridge fires up like a blowtorch! It must have a big flame compared to my old 8 cubic foot Dometics I'm used to

A guy pull into the campsite next to me yesterday and said he had a blow out on his way. It tore up his fender and gas lines. Had his propane been on and the burner for the refrigerator it could have been bad.

I don't think it would've been a problem. The Refrigerator is up pretty high and while going down the road the LP gas would be blown out and away from the trailer. In my opinion the only time the LP refrigerator could cause a problem in if you're in a closed area like a garage. Diesel fuel fumes aren't like the gas fumes so I wouldn't worry around the diesel fuel islands.

In all the years I've been around RVs ...I've never heard of one blowing up around a fuel island.

Probably not. If the propane lines were tore up, his refrigerator would not have been on anyway, but realistically the LP from the downstream side of the regulator is very low pressure and is heavier than air. It would need to collect in a confined space low to the ground for quite a while to cause any kind of risk.

The high pressure side of LP system is provided with overflow safety valves in the tanks and primary hoses that would close off if unrestricted flow was encountered from a failed hose.
