New tires

I am in need of new tires for a 2017 36RL.. It has 235/80/16 Westlakes from the factory. I tow about 3-5 thousand miles per year. RV shop wants to sell me Hercules H-901 tires that are F rated, even though he says they are 14 ply. (i thought G was 14 ply) I have read numerous posts about tires. Most recommend the GOODYEAR G 114 i think. Is there a cheaper option, as i don't tow that much? Will have to replace at 5 years anyway. Many folks are going the 17.5 tire and wheel option. should i look at that option? Trailer is 15300 loaded with about 3000 pin weight. So i have about 12300 on the two 7000lb axles. I will eventually go with the morryde IS disk brake option, but not for 5 years or so. Also will the 17.5 tires raise my rv higher? I am already at 13ft 9 inches at the top of a/c units. Thanks!

From everything you’ve listed, I would go with Sailun S637. Your choice if you want to go to the 17.5 but with your weights and useage I don’t think you need to. Sailun makes a great tire, either16” or 17.5”. I’ve got almost 11kon my set and totally happy with them.

Another vote for Sailun here. I got mine almost 3 years ago and they have been problem-free. When the time comes to replace them it will be with the same thing.

Saliun is a great option..

I would ARGUE the fact that you are 13'9" high though.....

That is a number I would want to be 100% sure of before hitting the road.... You may want to verify that, especially if you have not added the Morryde yet. My 2020 brochure said mine was 13'6" when I measured it, it was 13'2-1/2"

Another vote here for the Sailun tires, a definite NO on the F rated tires & a VERY strong recommendation to have your RW height verified, anything overhead 13'6" or less is the height measurement that most states are required to post overhead height warnings.

Stopped to look at new Redwoods in Mesa AZ yesterday and noticed they are coming with "Goodride" 17.5" tires...........I almost had to laugh. Wonder how many people automatically think "Goodyear" when they see that.

Jim, I had to laugh when I read your comment about Goodride.... When my 2020 came in, I was looking at pictures of it at first. I saw a partial pic of the wheel and tire and saw GOOD only in the pic.... I though I hit the jackpot ! ! ! !

Yep, new Sailun user here after a failure of an expensive GY G114 "H" tire on the way to last summer RW Rally.

Thanks for the information guys. How would you go about measuring the height. Ground to roof plus roof to top of a/c?

You'll need a ladder, a good level, a piece of good straight lumber long enough to reach the center of the RW from the ladder & a helper.
Park your RW hitched to your truck on a good level hard spot, from the ladder place the piece of lumber on top of the highest item on the roof, it may be a vent cover rather than the ac, level that & measure from the bottom edge of the lumber to the ground.

I measure mine while connected to the tow vehicle on a level concrete surface in my barn. I have done it by using 2 different methods.

One method - I used a straight 2x4 by 8 ft. length and a 4 foot carpenter's level. On by 2012 36RL, I have a satellite Dish antenna dome that is the highest point. I place one end of the 2x4 on the Dish dome and block up the other end off the roof to where it is level. Then I measure from the bottom edge of the 2x4 to the concrete floor.

Second method - I have a sheet metal ceiling in the barn and a concrete floor. When the coach is in the barn, I can measure from the top of the Dish dome to the ceiling and from the floor to the ceiling. The difference between the two measurements is the height of the coach.

My coach height measures 13 feet 4 1/2 inches. I would not want it to be any taller.

Hope this helps.

I would believe that you’re height is fairly typical

I would also suspect it's at normal height for all RWs, but if it's actually at 13'9" that could be very hazardous, best to verify & know for sure.

Looks like I will be in the $900 - 1200 range for new tires. Seriously thinking about going the 17.5 wheel and tire combo route. Performance Trailer braking has a combo with sailun tires for about $2000. I am looking for my best long term solution. We are not traveling more than 5000 miles per year now, but will travel more in the future. Anyone have any advice?

It looks like the 215/75/17.5 tires are shorter than my 235/85/16's by up to an inch. I can't lower my truck hitch any more. Wont this make me tow more nose high? I can go with the 235 /75/17.5, but I think it will ride like a tank. Should I just wait until I am ready to install morryde I/S to upgrade to the 17.5's?

How soon are you upgrading to the IS ? How many miles do you plan on putting on the Redwood between now and then ?
