Thanks for the info
I had time to check them today with the trusty voltmeter
I have a bad battery. You wouldn't believe the smell in the trailer even with the battery boxes sealed and coming out the vent. I am replacing them with maintenance free ones. No need for venting

Maintenance free doesn't mean no venting. Maintenance free wet cell batteries like my Interstates in the Redwood, still need to be vented. The maintenance free AGM battery in my Lance truck camper, doesn't need vented.

Even AGM batteries will vent hydrogen if overcharged. All batteries should be vented to the outside.

Not in the Redwood but In my TC. I currently have a Sears Platinum 31g. 210rc. Before that had an Optima blue top 31. It was proactively replaced after 8yrs. When the RW needs new batteries I will likely go with AGMs.

No expert here, but I've read on other forums that to use AGM batteries you need to have a converter/charge that can be set for them. Seems they require a different charge scheme than reg Lead/Acid. Again this is just what I have read, have never fully investagated the issue.

Most AGMs like to be charged at 14.4V rather than the 14.8V that wet cell batteries need to be FULLY charged. I put 3 AGMs in my 39MB but I also put in a Magnum Inverter as well which does a great job of charging either wet cell or AGMs.

We also have a 2012 36RL. My husband just asked about leaving the battery turned on while we are hooked up to shore power. Do we need to change the wiring so when we leave our unit in storage we will have good batteries to return to? New to the RV world.

Peggy, your batteries will be fine hooked up. The battery charger will step down to a trickle charge for long periods.

Not 100% sure but your Redwood is probably wired the same way as ours, if you don't have access to shore power your batteries will go flat over time whether the disconnect switch is on or off (and I also found out that you are on shore power and the disconnect switch is off your batteries will go flat because some wires bypass the disconnect switch). A number of us have moved the wires on the junction buss in the front basement compartment to ensure that when the battery disconnect switch is turned to off then there are no battery drains. An RV dealer could do this for you if you can't. I had to have some connectors on the wire coming from the battery re-crimped.

As Brad said, when plugged in the charger (converter) will do a good job of maintaining the batteries. As many have discovered, when left in storage for an extended period of time, you will most likely return to dead batteries even though you turn off the battery disconnect switch. The reason is that Redwood didn't totally isolate everything with the battery disconnect switch. I rewired mine so that when I turn the switch off, EVERYTHING is isolated from the batteries. You need an additional battery cable to do this modification.
