How do you like your convection oven?

We looked at a 31SL today that has the cooktop and drawers (no oven), but does have a convection oven/microwave. What does everyone think about baking with the convection oven?

We've had ours for 4 years now & the DW has it mastered. There is a learning process, but it works better than the gas oven in our last SOB. We are fulltime so the drawers for the extra storage was a must.

In our Redwood we had a gas oven. In our SOB we have a Sharp Convection and I have no problems with it. I've baked many different dishes including a whole 12lb turkey. It preheats fast and our cooks about 10% faster than what the recipe calls for. You would need to run some test on your unit to determine approximately the shortened cooking timeframe, as it varies by manufacturer.

Be sure to check the temp inside the oven before using it. Buy an oven thermometer, set it inside, set the oven thermometer, turn on oven and check the inside thermometer reading against the setting on the controls. Our Sharp convection oven works great but the over setting is 20 dF off. If we want 350 dF we have to set the thermostat at 370 dF.

My Redwood came with a standard Microwave and a gas oven.
Last summer while in NJ I bought a GE Profile Convection Microwave and installed it.
It works great, much better than the gas oven for baking.

We haven't had a standard gas oven in a few years.
We love the Convection as it exhaust the excess heat out thru the outside vent, making it great not to have the AC work overtime to keep the inside cool.

We have never lit our gas oven have only used the convection oven when baking in the RW. It would have been better to have the drawers than the over that my wife uses to store her pans in.

we have the drawers and convection M/W instead of the 'play' stove too !

My wife thinks kitchen appliances are decorative furniture only

but in her defense, we are still just 'vacationing' not living in the rv, so we like to go out to eat...

(hmmm, that happens at home a lot too )

Ovens

We use the microwave/convection oven instead of the gas, which was an upgrade(!?) I'd prefer the cabinets!
The convection took some getting used to, but it seems to do a good job. There is definitely no relation to the double oven GE Monogram convection ovens at home. The RW's is slower than a standard oven in my experience. I will probably uprade it next year.

We supplement the convection with a halogen oven I picked up at Walmart for $29.95! It does a great job on some things that require higher temps for browning. I store it in the bedroom in the cabinet to the side of the TV, which is deep enough for it.

We also supplement the cooktop with 2 induction units. They are cheap and easy to store.

Evada Cooper (Lady E) teaches an RV cooking class at the RW Rally, and has lots of helpful hints on the convection oven and induction units.
