GPS Question

We have been using the Magellian RV GPS for a number of years now and has worked perfect for us but my question is with the new GPS in the trucks such as our GMC. How do they work on the road towing the RV? I have set it up for the settings offered but have not used it on a long trip yet. I have confidence in the Magellian but I just don't know yet on the on-board one.

Every car / truck I have owned has had a GPS in it. They work just as well. The options your truck will have depends on what options they buy from (I think) Map Quest who supplies the soft ware to most on the makes. But I always carry a portable like a Garman. The reason is you could always add your own PIOs and could change things while moving. The built in ones once you are moving they won't let you do much to them. (safety) Also updating the built in needs the dealer. $$$$ We are picking up the new truck in 2 weeks with a GPS and actually tomorrow I'm ordering the new R M RV80. What I like about this animal is you can put in your weight, height, length etc. Even if you do not have a route planned out it will warn you there is a low over pass on the road you are on.

I on board on mine works very well, but as stated you can't program if it's in gear, safety, but inconvenient at times. I usually always check Google maps, truckers path app, & set the on board, & at different times one of the 3 will be wrong.

Since the ONLY thing that Garmin does is GPS,
they have more 'skin in the game' than the mfg's.

Gps for the mfg's is just an add-on and profit center...
In my experience every one of them have been poor programming, out of date maps, and expensive 'backup cameras' IMHO

Didn't matter which brand either, Audi, Ford, you name it...

We have the Garmin RV760, quarterly map updates and software updates for the life of the unit. Bro-in-law that had the RM brought it back and got the RV 760.

We have a 2014 Chevrolet with the built in navigation and it is a joke. We rely on our Garmin RV760.

In our Ram, the GPS has served us well. For some reason it knows construction issues etc and reroutes us. Only issue is low clearance routes, it does not have the ability to recognize these.

We prefer the Garmin over the truck nav sys...more user friendly and accurate (amazing how we ever got along without these devises...like cell phones they have made our travelling lifestyle so much eaiser).

I like the weather features on the truck (I think is through SiriusXM) - watched the tornados circle around our camp area one night - and the navigation seems to work well. It is not so easy to input a destination, but I do like the lane change info and every once in a while a picture showing the intersection.

I drove a rental 2016 Ford that uses a different system, and I didn't like the interface on that one at all.

My RV760 is long distance tool for us. I look like Battlestar Galactica with the factory nav screen, the RV760 screen, and the rearview camera screen in my face

I also use a Rand-McNally Good SAMs version. I like all the custom settings for your rig. The factory GPS, not so good ...

We use the Garmin DEZL760. I won't tow it without it. My truck has an in dash system but as many have said, it won't route you on truck routes where you know you are safe.

Ya tell me about it the 2016 Ram at 74000 MSRP has a gps with a two year old map and don't know where anything is my Garmin 760 kicks butt

We use the truck GPS sometimes, but I do not rely on it as it has not been updated for several years. On long trips we use Good Sam's travel planner, cell phone Google Maps or recently MapQuest (newest version which does awesome rerouting) and Rand McNally Truckers US map.

We probably end up using the Truckers Map more often than anything as it gives bridge height restrictions for all roads in all States.

I have the Rand McNally and it has now died. This is the replacement from the other that died while under warranty. The Garmin is more expensive, but my Garmins for cars have always been reliable. Anyone have an opinion which is better? My RAM has built in GPS which is pretty good, but I like the map updates from the other units.

Those electronics package options for vehicles are way too over priced. To me the built in units would draw my attention away from the highway too much.

I use a Rand McNally RVND-7720 LM and I can mount it to the windshield just to the left of the steering wheel where I can still have the highway in my vision. It provides a lot of information at a glance.
