Exhaust for an onan and 38rl

Got a call fom Tiara RV today telling me i need to get a measurment for the exhaust pipe they will install with my genny. I have never had an onboard genny, and with my bedroom slide,where would it exit the coach? I dont want to be responsible for wrong measurments.nig looks like possibly all the way back near the wheels????

I ordered mine from the factory. The exhaust exits well back. A little in front of the wheels

Good to know, does it come straight out from the center of the trailer.?


Is it safe to ASSUME that the pipe will go straight back from the generator , make a hard 90 degree bend towards the street side, and exit in between both slides??

What I have seen out there - is the pipe runs under the battery area, where you have a steel base, then turns towards the back, outside or near the frame, then 90 out between both slides. I think you might want to keep the extra heat away from the plastic underbelly. But since I done have a gen set yet, it is just prepped for one - One day...

I have seen it that way too. Probably the better install, except it looks like Corvette sidepipes

I tried to take a picture of my factory one today but the lighting was bad and it did not come out well. I will try again tomorrow.

Mine goes straight across the front under the battery box. It does not turn toward the back.

I think i will call them yet again and ask exactly what they want.. If i did it yout way Dave, it would exit under a slide

I believe mine came out between the bedroom and kitchen slide. I don't have all of my pictures right now at the office but I can look at my home computer and see what I have there.

On that photo it's where the frame transitions so it should be just past the slide.

Yes, it was below the water heater which also gives off exhaust so it should be alright.

True about the distance being okay. Code states that it has to be 36" from a slide out type opening into the living quarters. Slide out room should be way above that. On our 2012 36RL it is. Our exhaust runs straight back along the door side or curb side of the coach. A muffler is placed right behind the drop floor portion of the frame and then goes across and out the other side near the tank terminations and in front of the middle hydraulic jack like in Dave's photo.

Before it got too dark outside I took some pictures of what our exhaust looks like on our 2012 36RL. Maybe this will help you decide where to run yours and how to measure.

Thanks Chris... That helps.. It would be a world easier if I had one before, but it will be my first.. Even if I knew exactly where on the generator the exhaust comes out... As I said before, I think this may warrant a long call to them and Redwood tomorrow

Your front compartment bottom metal should be prestamped with the pattern for an Onan Geny. That makes it easier to remove the correct areas. Tiara is a pretty large RV dealer. They should have the measurements on where exactly where the exhaust comes out. And they should have several Redwoods there. Maybe even one like your 38RL to possibly look at and measure. If not on a Redwood then on some other brand that they might carry also.
Onan should even have a technical drawing of the bottom of the Generator with measurements and sizes of what you might need. Maybe look at Onan ( cummins) site or email them. They probably have what you need.

Why the heck is your muffler hanging down under the coach?? Mine is up inside the Onan, built in. All I have outside of the Onan enclosure is exhaust pipe.

For real class.......you can get a chrome tip to go on the pipe.

Brad, I am not sure why the muffler is behind the drop part of the frame. My guess is because my 6500 Onan that came in our 2012 36RL was originally gas and was converted to LP. I would assume that the previous owner moved it from coach to coach when they traded or upgraded. Not sure if ours has the muffler built in or not, probably why it was installed as part of the exhaust. Puts out 54 amps. Works fine. Sure doesn't look near as bulky or boxy as the modern ones.
