on a 3 axle configuration, the rear axle suffers from "tire scrub" in tight turns. That's one of the reasons why Newmar went with the dual wheel configuration on some of their heavy trailers (which I thought was kind of cool). However, in my "non-engineer trained" mind.....it sure would seem to me that 3rd axle would help carry the load on longer frames.

This would also give 2 more tires/brakes to stop a lot of weight. Instead of having 4 "G" tires you could have 6 "E" which are easier to find on the road.

On the negative....states like Illinois (we have the best politicians money can buy) we're charged by the axle on our state license plates. That's why we all try to ride unicycles, however that skill seemed to escape me(not enough Jack).

I like that! Our toll roads charge by the axle, with each axle after the first two being a full car. Once and only once I pulled our old 5er and boat through and each toll hit me for 5 cars. I honestly didn't think they could detect I had a trailer.

There was a 3 axles Redwood toy hauler, RW39HH. Here are a couple of examples.

Like Dave said, its all about GVWR, If the weight exceeds what two 8K and tires will do, they go to 3 6K or 7K axles, sometimes 4 on boats

I like the "hobby hauler" idea. I could build a nice office for the wife in the cargo area but I didn't care for the rest of the floor plan.

The hobby hauler had potential IMHO. However the TV placement still was a little odd. Someday someone will make a nice toy hauler layout and I'll jump to it, Elevation is starting to get pretty close...

My rule of thumb is that I have to be able to get to the bathroom,fridge and bedroom without putting the slides out. If they make a toy hauler like this, I'd consider it. We'd like to find one and then turn the back area into an office.

In our FB we can open the right doors on the refer/freezer, get to the bathroom and to our bed. Cant open the dresser drawers but can get to the overhead cabinets over the dresser.

So far this is the only toy hauler I've seen that I really like. The floor plan doesn't do it justice. The front cap is actually a seating area with a large viewing window. Having looked at this in person it has a lot of the Redwood styling queues inside, definitely a lot of the same parts.

The problem with this one is the carrying capacity. 3100 lbs isn't much when you consider that their weights are probably on the lite side just like the Redwood brochures.

You start to look at the pictures of the Elevation, and they begin to look nothing like the 39HH Redwood - cheaper windows, cheaper exterior lights, etc. That Redwood was a good looking hauler!

In the FL we have easy access to the bathroom via the 2nd door and the entire kitchen via the main door. But the bedroom, you have to be really skinny to get through the opening in the door and short to use the bed, as about 2' disappears under the dressers.

I tried to sell my wife on the idea of a toy hauler with the promise of a REAL sewing room for her (and computer workstation for me). But she looked at the loss to kitchen space and storage, and said "no way!" Kitchen trumps sewing space, and being a reasonably intelligent guy (who loves her cooking), I offered no further argument. :-) Instead, we'll replace the couch with our current kitchen table, raise it to counter-top height, store her sewing machine cart and a computer cart under the table and roll one of them out when we want to use it. When both workstations are not in use, the table will offer an additional 18 sq.ft. of counter space for her or work table space for me. You can never have too much horizontal work space! :-)
