Cedar Closet?

This isn't a big deal, but after reading in the literature about the "cedar-lined closets" I'll admit I was fooled when I was at the RV show in Hershey last September. We bought the 38GK demo unit, had it put into storage and went up to take measurements etc. a month ago. That's when I noticed that my "cedar closets" were covered with faux cedar-print vinyl. It's certainly no deal breaker (and certainly saves weight), but I'm just wondering if anyone out there actually has real cedar in their closets. Thanks in advance...

LOL Alan... I was at the show with the Factory Rep (VERN) and pointed this out. He didn't understand what I was concerned about, it "looks just like cedar". Haha. I explained that yes, it was very pretty, but the MOTHS won't be FOOLED by the faux cedar!! haha. And then we moved on to the "Leather furniture"

I guess I will just hang cedar in the closet. Any Bed Bath and Beyond has those.

Yeah, I noticed the absence of "dead cows" in our unit as well, LOL! I WILL get upset if I discover that the cherry cabinets are veneered particle board, however. And then get over it ... it's too late now! :-) and pay a visit to B, B &B for some real cedar.

I think I will be ok with the vinyl furniture as long as it holds up well. Frankly, always had leather furniture in the S&B (Sticks and Bricks) and it needs lots of maintenance to stay nice. It dries, cracks, fades... just like wood. If the furniture in the RW stays like it is, then I don't care WHAT it's made of! Just like the flooring, folks get all bent about needing real wood flooring. Same story: IT'S FRAGILE and it's HEAVY. These days, the modern materials are lighter, cheaper and stronger. Count me in. Just BE HONEST about what I am buying ;-) I agree on the cabinets!

I just got an email about this from Jeff, who evidently works at RW. He responded:
"Hi Alan & Angele,

Redwoods had aromatic cedar in the closets until ~2013, but we had to change them because some folks in more extreme climates were having issues with the cedar cracking.

We are working to update our literature to reflect this.

Hope this helps!"

This may explain why I was so sure that I had actually seen a cedar closet, and so surprised that it wasn't real wood in my unit - I'll bet I saw one at the RV show, and that stuck in my mind as being in all the units. But more importantly, this means that at least a few people at HQ are monitoring this forum. I don't know why you didn't post that on the forum, Jeff, and I hope I haven't blown your cover - but thanks! Tell all your co-workers (designers, engineers) to keep an eye open too! :-)

My buddy was terribly alergic to Cedar. He would have been in a pickle.

If you are trying to keep moths out; try moth balls. Moth balls keep things smelling fresh.

I did post that, but as soon as I did I wanted to try to find some more information about it so I took it down until I could be more thorough. The real cedar was only produced for about 2-3 months, and we noticed the QC concerns I mentioned.

I didn't work for Redwood back then, so I wanted to make sure I was as accurate as possible. Sorry for the confusion!

OK, Case of the Missing Post is solved (did ya hear that, Angele? The man sez I'm not going crazy...) And I'm POSITIVE that I saw one somewhere at the Hershey show - that touch impressed me. I'm disappointed that it isn't in my unit, but I'll bet that black nose heats the closet up pretty good, and now I won't have to come in for that warranty repair. It's all good... :-)

Moth balls stink, but I'll grant you that they work. I'll seal my wool shirts and sweaters in zipable garment bags (with cedar strips!) and be done with it. NO moth balls!!!

Moth balls are going to keep my wife out of the closet too! Then who's going to hang up the clothes? Besides...it not fair to the moths....poor little fellas.

Has anyone tried something like Cedar Hang-ups

I've used something like them in my B&S house for years and they seems to work pretty good. Might just get some for our RW....

Go to a lumber yard etc. and pick up a small piece od RED cedar that is designed for use in closets (just smell it first) and cut small flat pieces and place them on your shelves. Try online as well. Much better then the dreaded MOTH BALLS.

Honestly,
I don't recall the last time I SAW or heard of a moth

and we don't have cedar anywhere - maybe moths don't like our Texas climate ?!?

I lost a couple of expensive Pendleton wool shirts to moths a few years back, but bags of red cedar shavings, or board pieces are easy enough to find. I'm not really concerned about moths, but I was concerned about holes in my memory - I could have sworn I'd seen a real cedar closet in RW at last September's Hershey show, and now I think I probably did, but in another, older unit. Otherwise, this is not an important issue to me.
