Has anyone had problems with the A/C? Our bedroom only has 2 vents and it is always hot. Also, why is the walkin closet so hot and stuffy. The unit as a hole doesn't seem like it cools well. We have had it out twice with the same results. Any suggestions?Edited by: rayrussel

Mine cools extremely well. I am no expert but I would guess the cap is hot due to it probably having the least amount of insulation and your cap probably being a darker color? I also have the shortest redwood so probably why mine cools so well.

I also cut the one off in the bathroom to help push more air in bedroom. we don't need cold air when getting out of a shower.

We have a 36 RL and have not had a problem. Even with a 30 amp service last week and only running one unit it got plenty cold. Although it was only 80 outside. Our nose closet is warm on hot days acold on cold days.

How many air conditioning units on your rig?

Are you getting good velocity and cool air coming from the front to vents? If not, something may be plugged. Our 2 ACs do an awesome job of cooling, but the closet can be a sauna if we leave the doors closed. We will check the insulation as well up there. We have the black nose.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but think our new gk has heat pumps and not 'ac' units....

and having had them a long time ago when I first moved to Texas, they fought the elements

If you paid for heat pumps on the order sheet, you got them. Otherwise they are just AC units.

As far as cooling, the AC and Heat Pump are identical. The heat pump option just reverses the compressor on the AC. We have 2 on ours, and they are awesome for saving LP at a campsite, but you do wake up to a cold floor.

Today I removed both shoe boxes and added additional insulation to the nose cone. I also placed an order to M4 Products for 54 new LED bulbs($$$ouch$$$). I'm hoping all this helps.

I was talking the other day with a fellow RV owner who told me this story: She and her husband, both engineer types, were trying to decide on the paint color for their new RV. With an IR heat gun, they measured the surface temperature of a light colored RV at about 115 in the sun at mid-day in Texas. Just a few yards away, a dark paint RV measured 175!

RV AC units are not able to create a 68 degree environment inside the coach under any set of conditions. They can only reduce the temperature by some value below ambient, typically around 20 degrees. If the coach is parked in an open field in Arizona, it might be that 80 or 85 is the best that can be done.

This may or may not be applicable to your situation, but it's another piece of the puzzle.

Correct - we discussed that when ordering
as I was awakened to that fact when I reached over my tuxedo black truck's fender to pull the hitch release ...

I jumped quite a bit when my 'tender' underarm touched it that sunny HOT surface

and with the black 'nose' on some coaches explain the hot front closets !

Part of the reason for the max 20 degree difference between ambient and A/C discharge is good engineering design. It reduces the complaints from people in the room about cold drafts on their heads/shoulders.

If there is enough A/C capacity and the filters aren't clogged the temp variance should remain as the A/C unit(s) pull the room temp down to the T/stat set-point. Too much outside air coming into the RV (open windows and frequent opening of doors) will defeat the cooling.

Thank you all for your observations.

The LED's will be in tomorrow and we'll see how that goes. It has to be an improvement over the halogens. You can feel the heat off of those things 18" away.
For the record my rig is parked under cover out of the sun. But when I pulled the shoe boxes out the heat poured in like water. Considering the modest amount of factory insulation I found I have high hopes for the upgrade. When I get the LED's in I am going to fire up the AC's for a test run. Since the weather in Tennessee has cooled down to the mid 80's I should be fine.

Next I'm going to work on the mattress.

Did you actually install a 3rd AC in your Redwood?

Just put 1 led in a fixture, turn on the lights, and feel the difference between the halogen and led. The difference is incredible.

For warm color you will want warm white, warm white is more yellow. Cool white is more on the blue side of the color spectrum.Edited by: KenM
