Ok, I know you've TRIED to educate me, but one more time :-}

First apologies for the long post...

I can make pc's, mainframes, networks dance,
but this propane thingy gives me a headache

Something just made me feel that I needed propane,
so took the rv to my local propane, muffler, and pc shop that I've been using for years and they removed and filled my 40 #'ers...
one was completely empty and the other had 2 lbs in it - so I guessed right.

Since it's impossible to see the changeover bulb where redwood mounted it on the side - I tried to take some pictures and posted below...

We have 2 tanks.
I closed both tanks,
pointed the "lever" to the tank next to the changeover valve (tank A),
I opened that tank ONLY to see if the sight glass changed...
Couldn't see it so took a picture - it's black ! not red or green !!!

Do I have to run the stove or something to see the green or red ?

SO --- What I THINK I know the way it should work is:

start with both tanks full...

Make sure that the lever on the changeover valve is pointed at Tank A.
The sight glass should show green...
Tank A is used until it runs out.
The sight glass turns red.
The regulator auto transfers to Tank B and starts using gas from tank B.

Now is the time to switch the lever and fill tank A.

(If the lever is left on tank A the glass stays red meaning Tank A is empty.
If you do not change the lever, Tank B will be used until it too is empty.)

The lever indicates the level of the tank that it is pointed to.

so when Tank B is empty (red) turn the lever to tank A and fill tank B, etc...

So I think I know it, but thinking I need to relocate the regulator so I can see it...

thanks for reading my pondering thoughts

I think everything you said is correct, however, I don't think it ever changes to green as there is no green. Black shows full, it slowly goes to red as it empties. I do agree the location is poor and makes it very hard to read.

We generally only open one tank at a time. When it runs out, time to move the lever to the other tank and open it.
Granted we could run out in the middle of the night on a cold and nasty night, but hopefully not in Florida. While we could run out at a not so great time, at least we'll never be totally out, provided we had the empty refilled. Especially since that window in the switchover valve is hard to see and accuracy is questionable at best.
Been doing it this way since '91 when we got our first dual tank system.

There you go - I think some folks, including myself, kept expected Green/Red like the Marshall Brass valve that used to be predominant on RVs.

How do I help it other than wash it well ?

It was a tough year for alot of guys around here. We were in Elk 5 out of 7 days, but could not get a shot off. Also, we had two bull tags and could not figure out a way to glue antlers on all those cows at 50 yds

Mix in a pump up sprayer one part vinegar four parts water, spray well, then use high alkaline soap....or laundry liquid...saturate...rinse..repeat.
Acid alkaline procedure is similar to two step used in commercial truck wash. Procedure releases organic matter buy taking out static charge, will stop corrosion as well by removing charge from surface.

Will make chrome and aluminium going also. Will not hurt paint, just not good idea to let dry on surface.

My fix for the propane tanks was to buy 2 in line gas gauges in the BBQ dept of Home Depot. Now I know exactly how much I have without having to get out an inspection mirror to see the factory mounted switch.

Go to Costco.... $20...

We use the same valves. So far so good. I monitor them when I dump. But for the most part I leave one valve closed until I enter the low position on the open valve. I have also added small padlocks to those clips which hold the tank in its cradle.
