I think that is the trouble with a glass lined tank - any defect in the lining and it's shot in a short time.

I just looked at the suburban manual on the anode...

I just looked at the suburban manual on the anode rod, and other than telling you that warranty is over for not using a genuine suburban anode rod, they are silent on whether they should be aluminum...
