Ya we had the same issue. Mine tailgate was within 1/2 inch of the trailer when perfectly square. I had to remember to get out and operate the gate as I was halfway through hitching or unhitching....

By keeping the tailgate on, the area in front of the tailgate is great for stowing equipment. We keep two coolers there.
