Oh, I forgot to release the pressure on the hot water heater and unscrew the drain plug(you won't forget to release the pressure but once).
I always blow mine out and add anti freeze. Much easier...

With the valves open I put a couple drops of 3 in 1 oil on the shaft and close the valve for a few days. The oil will penetrate down the cable. Never had a problem.

I took the shoe racks out and worked in a bundle of unfaced batt insulation into the cavity behind the front cap. Didn't seem to help. I'll just keep the doors closed for now.

The belly heat runs off the furnace only. The vent is in the basement ceiling. The heat pump will have no effect. I use a ceramic heater in the basement when I'm on the heat pump.

Roads seem steeper than they are. A 3%-4% grade is pretty steep and is the max engineers try to maintain. You will find some 7% grades around the Rockies but they are rare and difficult to handle....

I took the factory filter housing out and connected the loose hose ends with a coupling from Home Depot. I use an in line filter in the supply line. No mess, no flooding, no winterizing.
