we have a 2015 GK. As of now it has about 1000 miles on it. Once at the rally that may go to 2500 total. We will be looking for a buyer for the tires and rims including the spare as we are upgrading to the 17.5 and H tires. as well as disc brakes. So if someone wants a deal the old brakes can go with the kit. Let me know...

I would suggest ordering the tires now and ship to your home location so you don't have to haul the off tires back with you. There may be some older RW there with ST235/80R16 E on them and the LT235/85R16 G coming off would make a great, in expensive upgrade.

If he could get someone going to the Rally that wants them, then it would be worth him swapping them out at the Rally. I guess he would have to decide pretty soon where he wants his new tiresand wheels to be delivered. Anyone that has a 31SL like me, the "G's" would be probably all the tire they would need. Thanks to Scott Bergeman I was able to upgrade mine. I think my E's were fine but the G's were a great upgrade.

Dumb question here - The 17.5 rims will fit on the original 7000 lb axle? What is the average price on switching to 17.5 and H tires? What H rating tires is everyone recommending? Would there be enough clearance for these on my 2012? These modifications sound great, but not quite ready for the expense after just purchasing the "new to us" 2012 36FL RW. I just put some E rated Maxxis brand tires on one side and plan to change the other side (dated 2012) in a month or so. I have alot of friends that have had really good luck with the Maxxis after having Goodyears blowout on them. I will plan to keep them changed about every two to three years.

Overall diameter is the same as your E rated tires.

Ouch. I could buy about 22 Maxxis tires for that kind of money.

The only caution all of us will make is that these coaches, other than the 31SL when lightly loaded, are too heavy for an E rated tire. I will be upgrading my G' Goodyears to H's in the near future. LAST THING I want is to have a blowout and damage. My Goodyears currently have about 19k miles on them and looking at wear pattern, will probably be good for another 12-15k. At that point, I'll sell them to someone for their equipment or landscape trailer and take Ron up on his deal.

My math is a little different. Look at some the repair bills posted here for blowouts. The problem with blowouts is that they seem to remove significant parts of the RW. It was that cost that convinced me to upgrade the tires.

Upgrading the brakes did come first.

The third upgrade will be suspension.

I keep hearing the 31SL is ok with E's. There are people here on this forum that will tell me I am crazy but I come from the School that Heavy Duty is always better. I ordered my 31 with 8k axles, 17.5's with H tires and disc brakes.

It helps me sleep at night.

I can totally understand this. I will keep it in mind for the future. Most of my camping trips are within 200-300 miles, but if I plan to take it cross country, I will be looking at doing something. It's too bad that they under built everything under the frame for such a beautiful camper.

I agree. But keep this in mind, my other math. The price difference from ordering the RW with disk brakes and tires is almost zero from ordering it from Ron. I also have comfort in knowing if I have a problem with the brakes I can get hold of Ron. So you are not losing money.

In the end, once the under carriage upgrades are done, it would be impossible to find a better camper for the price.

I also don't view this much different then buying a Jeep and then start replacing everything.

And if I was ordering a new 31SL, like xtasee it would have Disc, and 17.5"s It also would go to MorRyde for an IS suspension before I got it.


Won't have another fifth wheel without it.

I just got my quote for my repair bill for my simple blow out of my G rated tire for the sum of almost $11,000. Just think of how many Maxxis tires I could have bought with that.........I could have replaced all the tires once a week for a year for that price.

My tire failure happened about 45 minutes from my home. I posted this in " what did you do to your Redwood today" post. The down time of my unit is just killing me. For the most part if I were you I would upgrade the tires to at least G rated tires for such a small amount of travel that you do. All things built today are built at the 85th percentile in mind. Most tires rated at max capacity, manufactures believing that the 15% of the time the tire will be running at its maximum weight capacity. RVs run the tires at max capacity 100% of the time. This translates to very short life expectancy. If the tire is upgraded so it runs at 50% of it max capacity 100% of the time the tire should last until the tread is gone before the casings are shot, just like on you car or pick up truck

Yes it is a factory option and I chose it. It does not affect the height of the coach. Still 13' 2"

Guaranteed the DW can overload anything


I also added the Tire Pressure Monitors. As others have said. Cant prevent all blowouts but knowing the temps and pressures gives you a fighting chance.
