Trailer Stopping Distance

I just ran across this test and thought I would pass it on. It is very difficult to convey the difference disc brakes makes. Except to those who already have them.

1st test was no trailer and the truck empty.
2nd & 3rd test used a 16,000 lb. trailer, using electric brakes.
Canadian Standards Tests show the Titan Disc Brake System stopping a 15,500 lb. trailer in 179 ft. using trailer brakes only. No truck brakes were used in this test.

This 179 ft. is a 100 ft. shorter stopping distance than this test using truck and trailer electric brakes!

I do know when I'm rolling down I-70 at a 7% grade with 17,220 lbs pushing my wide butt truck, it's comforting to feel those disks tame the hill.

But where the really shine is just everyday traffic. The power to pull and the power to stop really makes it a pleasure to RV.

That is what I want to do soon soon. I want to upgrade to 8K axles first but I can't figure out where to get those.

Brad - totally agree. The stopping power of the discs is great.

We were heading through the Siskiyou mountains and were travelling through a construction area where there were barriers on both sides (with no shoulder on the road) we were heading for one of the long pulls and I was getting a run on we were going around a blind turn there was a "B" train going about 15mph and another going about 20 when he decided to pull out and pass I hit the brakes as hard as I could there was no where to go we just had to stop, I looked behind I figured the Redwood would be trying to pass I looked up there was a small SUV and he was trying to stop on his dime, figured we would all end up in a tangled mess but the Redwood with her disc brakes tracked around perfectly and we stopped inches apart. I will never ever have a 5th wheel without disc brakes

Dan, +2 We had an idiot pull out from the side of a 2 lane and then decide he wanted to get on the interstate which was a left exit in front of us. He then proceeded to STOP !! Climbed all over the brakes while laying on the airhorn. Totally convince that if we still had the drum brakes we would have run over him and probably killed him.

'course that would have taken 1 idiot out of the gene pool !!

Like you, will NEVER have another 5er without Discs, and until there is something better, MORyde IS Suspension.

On my very first tow with the Titan Discs I had someone pull out directly in front of me and also come to a dead stop.. My first thoughts were to ditch it before we rear end and kill this person... Glad I didn't do that..After I stopped , My wife actually gave me the head nod and smile , saying that she finally thought it was not a waste of money to add them !

That's pretty much it - and a higher GVWR that may help resale. It's probably more helpful for your butt heavy FL than our 36RL that is heavy on the nose. I'm at my full 17,500 GVWR, yet only 6,500 lbs on each of my 8,000 lb axles (derated to 7,500 lbs because of the limit on G614 tires).

Now with the 8K axles and 17.5 H tires you get a gross of 17.9K and the way we travel for long term need every bit of that.

While I would like 8k axles. I won't replace the 7k's unless I have a problem. The 8k axle is only $100 more expensive.

Thank you for the informative chart. My long overdue to-do to you to is done finally. The Titan brakes you installed at last year's RW have now been tested with my new 2016 Silverado High Country 3500 DWD long bed. The brakes worked wonderfully. The black interface module was inplace as you noted. The test was over interstate and suburban roads.

The delay was due to unscheduled to delays for the new Reese Elite removable 25K hitch, unplanned surgery followed by double pneumonia due to stuff going wrong during surgery.

Thanks for all you did to accomplish the install during the rally. Very pleased with the Titan disc brakes.

No, I will not but, depending on the exact dates, I may be able to get an installer there.
Currently we are still planning a Colorado trip in May and will be in the Texas Hill Country the end of Feb.
You can see my schedule @ Performance Trailer Braking Titan Hydraulic Disc Brake Conversion Kits and Installation

Ron, and Forum. Today was my first time to tow my 38GK with the new Titan Disc brakes. WOW!!! as luck would have it I got to test them out in a emergency situation. Not saying I could not have stopped with the drum brakes. But I will say things would have been very interesting. I was coming around I 610 south in Houston headed toward I-45 south. While I had just come over the Ship channel over pass which is a very steep grade. Coming down I-610 has a a strong curve and goes under a over pass which challenges your ability to see very far ahead. The traffic had come to a sudden stop and I had little or not room to switch lanes. I got on the brakes and was very impressed with the ability to come to a full and complete stop in half the distance of normal. Today they paid for themselves in my opinion. I will say Ron and his recommended installer John are great to deal with. Top notch folks in my book. Thanks Ron

I'm glad your happy with the new brakes!

Life is full of choices (purchases). Disk brakes was something that Ginny pushed for and I thanked her several times when we had the Redwood. I'm always amazed how much effort is put into torque and horse power yet the same effort isn't put into stopping large amounts of weight at high speeds.
