I have noted that the Redwoods are capable of towing around 3000 lbs. behind the trailer. Do any of you have any experience with pulling a small vehicle or trailer behind your RW?

Thanks

Rick

Rick, l have towed my 17ft fishing boat many times behind my 36rl. The boat tracks really well I don't know it is even there. The boat trailer doesn't have brakes. My 36rl has a 21k pin box with a 25k 5th wheel hitch.Just make sure you are not exceeding your GVW of your tv. or yor pinbox. Check your States length limits with my boat Iam 75ft long , my state has 70ft lengh.I have never been stopped I have pulled to Ontario to KY. Good luck o

I pull my goldwing 1800 on a trailer probably 12 feet long and have a rear view camera it is rock solid back there.
Live by Niagara Falls Ontario.
Last year we traveled to California and this year we are in Florida no problems so far.
I pull with a 2011 Chev 3500 dually I do not think it would be a good thing to do this with a smaller truck.

The Redwood is rate at 3000 lbs so I think the Jeep Wrangler will be a bit much in weight. I am looking at attaching a Smart for two or one of the new Fiat's. both weigh in under 2000 lbs.

They probably limited the weight to 3000 lbs because of the extra pressure on the pin box which which is rated for 18000 lbs. The way that the hitch is welded in place it would hold much more.

The limits are 3000 lbs. trailer weight and 300 lbs. hitch weight.

The Lippert folks said at the RW rally last August that any modification to the frame voids the frame warranty.

Ya Lippert always says that. According to Lippert, you can't even put a 5th wheel on top because it would mean drilling holes in the frame.

You warranty is through Redwood, not Lippert. Redwood may cover things even though Lippert hides under a rock.

Nobody has posted here in a while but just wanted to add I pull a light weight trailer rated to 3000 lbs with brakes behind my 2014 38FL. It pulled fine until the receiver hitch broke off the 5th wheel in the middle of Denver! To say it was exciting is an under statement. Anyway, nobody was hurt or too much damage. The trailer brakes couldn't work because they were connected to the receiver hitch that broke off the 5th Wheel.
I had a new receiver hitch installed on the 5th wheel by Cowboy Metals in Denver. they also repaired all the damage to my small pull behind trailer. What a class company! If anyone needs any metal work done on their truck, trailer, RV, etc. they are the go to folks in that area. I couldn't have asked for better work and very reasonable cost, too. The new hitch is 10 times stronger than the factory one. Welds broke on the factory hitch.
BTW, my rig is well over the max length for most states and I have traveled through most Midwestern and rocky mountain states and Texas and have not had any problems with law enforcement. Hope I never do.

Pulling Double

We purchased our Redwood 36RL last summer and have been pulling double with it as we did with our 32ft Challenger. We are from Colorado Springs, Co. and pull a 14ft trailer with two ATV's onboard behind the fifth wheel, the total length is about 68ft. Our place to play is Grand Lake, Co. where we need to travel over Berthoud Pass. We also have pulled to Grand Junction, Co. and Moab, Utah with the other fifth wheel and plan on doing this with the Redwood as well.

The truck is a 2009 Dodge 3500 with a factory exhaust brake, nothing special. I was a little hesitant in the beginning but after talking to some others who pull double on an ATV forum we decided give it a try and had a hitch installed on the Challenger. The only disappointment on the Redwood was it was not wired for pulling.

The Redwood is quite a bit heavier so on the first trip to Grand Lake I had my better half follow me just to be sure the truck would handle the extra weight. It worked with no problems and we have been back a second time. We will be spending 2 months in Grand Lake this summer, 2014 then in Oct. we will head to Moab with the entire load. The trailer tracks right behind the fifth wheel so turning is the same with or without it. I have any gas stops planned ahead using truck stops so I never get into a tight situation.

Very Cool. Did you have to extend the tongue on the trailer to keep the small trailer from hitting the back of the Redwood?

No, we haul 2 two-up atv's on an Echo trailer. It is the same as towing directly behind the truck. Everything probably weighs in around 2000 lbs.

Very nice. We hope to add a Ranger on a trailer to the fleet someday.

I am looking to add a Scooter rack, Scooter weighs 280 lbs. Does anyone know if the hitch will hold that? Appears that at 280 lbs plus 47 lbs for the rack I would be a little over the rating?

The hitch is rated at only 300 lbs.

I don't think I would try it without some serious reinforcing of the hitch. I can't even imagine what the force of 300 Lbs would do when you hit some of those bridge joints.
