Tow Vehical for a Friend

A friend of mine was looking at Class A's and I suggested 5th wheels.

My question, when looking for a used dually, and wanting to keep the price to around 40k, what should he look for or avoid? For instance, is 80k too many miles on a diesel for a 2013, or is it better to look at a 2010 with 40k miles.

Any advice on how to shop for a used dually would be helpful.

Thanks, and Happy Easter
Scott

Hey Scott, I would go to cars.com and be willing to drive just about anywhere to find a great deal. I would think at 40k you could be looking at some fairly new models. With cars.com you can plug in all the variables of what you are looking for and it will bring all available vehicles up. As to your other questions, I was always told that a diesel doesn't really get broken in until at least 60,000 miles or more. There have been major diesel changes during the 2010 and 2013. Model years for Ford anyway. They introduced their new 6.7 litre diesel in 2011 and so far it has proven to be a great engine. Don't know if I could say that for the 2010. I think until they all went to DEF system, many struggled with issues.

One thing I know for sure: Diesel engines are definitely better for towing and built for longevity. The issue is with the rest of the vehicle. I just sold an '03 one ton diesel with over 200k miles. I had full confidence in the engine but was at the point where steering, suspension, engine accessories, electrical etc were needing constant maintenance. If I were to be concerned about a breakdown, it wasn't over the engine it was everything else.
