Question Tire recommendations for 2011 Chev 3500 Dually diesel

The last threads I saw on this forum were dated 2015, so I need some current feedback on your experiences.

My 2011 Chev. 3500 dually OEM's were LT235/80R17 Michelin LTX M/S 2's. I replaced them in 2015 with the same. Now it is time to replace them again.

Neither time have I gotten anywhere close to the warranted tread wear from them.

They have been replaced by the Defender LTX M/S which are supposedly an improvement, but when I called Michelin Corporate I was told that they do not make my size in them. He recommended their LTX A/T 2's for my use.

When I checked for ratings, Tire Rack had them as 13 from the top, the top tire being General Grabber ATX. Although, the opinions on the Michelin were from over @ million driving miles & a lot of drivers while the General were from only
227,00 miles & 13 opinions. HELP! What is the consensus here?

I have run the same Michelin tires for years . I get roughly 45,000 miles on each set. If the truck is being used for towing mostly your going to be lucky to get 30k . These trucks put way more power to the tires then gas trucks and they chew the tread right off pulling hills . I just got back from Elkhart , 2000+ miles towing (26,800 lbs total) I noticed the rear tires showed feather on the rear only . Keep in mind my truck is a single rear wheel so those tires most likey wear faster then a duel rear wheel truck. I feel Michelin tires are worth the extra 20% just in tread wear , traction wise they a very good compared to many.

I will add that the M/S has a softer compound so they will not get as many miles as a harder compound tire would. They are a good all around weather tire. I also run Michelin and are happy with them. I do not remember which one but they do have the 80lb inflation.

Last year I had same issue for replacements on my ‘12 GMC CC DRW 4x6. Michelin discontinued them. Went to couple dealers to find out what new trucks were coming with. Ended up trading truck in. Ha ha.. wife saw through that one.

Just for reference, my ‘18 GMC CC DRW 4x6 came with Michelin LT235/80R-17 Primacy XC. They sell them at tire rack too.

So Mike,

You went to Tire Rack and came home with a new truck?!!! Wow! What a deal!

Embarrassingly... I went to couple dealers to find one with all terrain tires. Wrote down the tire model and that’s when I should have called Tire Rack.

Instead I said “maybe I’ll just check what they’d give me for my truck because it’s only got 25k on it.” As they say, the rest is history.

My '13 DRW Denali came equipped with the Michelin LTX that I replaced at just shy of 70k miles with the same Michelins that at the time I traded the truck off this past Jan they had just over 67k miles with plenty of tread, both sets were 50%+/- towing
I've ran Goodyear, Firestone, Falken (all getting barely 30k+/- miles) & Yokohama, with the best mileage (40k plus), second to Michelin.
They're pricey, but from my experiences of 2-3 sets to one Michelin, I'll stay with the Michelins.

the other thing I think many over miss is tire rotations and proper air pressure. These trucks DONT need 80 psi if your running around empty. the front end of the truck carrys about 4700 - 5000lbs between 2 tires . your rear axel is carrying bout 8000 lbs loaded between 4 tires , if you look at tire manufactures chart they are minimum pressures so do what you think is right but to much pressure is no good if your not loading them. I think there may also be some benefit from rear tire air pressure balancing tubes. it helps with the cup in the roads letting both inside and outside carry about the same load on roads that are cupped. just some random thought and not every one will agree and I understand that .

The main problem with these GMC dually trucks (probably others) is that when you get polished steel wheels, you only get four. So to rotate the tires, they must be dismounted and relocated. What a pain...

Or if you have the Aluminum wheels, you only get 4 and 2 steel wheels

Thanks to all for your input. I had intended to replace with Michelin LTX M/S 2's again, but Michelin has discontinued this popular tire & replaced it with the Defender LTX M/S. However, they for some reason do not make it in a 235/80R17 size. I do all highway driving & towing so do not want an A/T tire. Has anyone found a good alternative?

you could check with BJ's tire and Costco , sometime the clubs have tires in stock that a Michelin dealer cant get.

Thanks for the info. Is your new GMC a diesel? If it is, how many miles per gallon do you get with those Primacys, both towing your Redwood & just the truck?

I haven't had the truck long enough yet to get mpg data, sorry. With less than 1000 mi. it is averaging about 13 in and around town and 18 on a 60 mile trip so far.

I think you’ll find that most CC Dually diesels get between 10.5 & 11.5mpg when towing the Redwood.

I'm on my second set of Firestone Transforce HTs. The pin weight of the Redwood and weight of my Lance TC, are within 200#. 3300 and 3500. I run what the door sticker says. 65 frt. and 60 rear. I rotate them once a year and get 40,000+ miles. I don't run mine all the way down, when it gets squirrely when empty in the rain I change them.

Michelin tires are more price but I have been using firestone transforce for years and.they out preform michelins. Snow and ice they work even better. Fuel economy is the same the draw back I would say is they are just a little noises then the Michelin tires. But do what u can afford and good luck.
