Those of us that double ....

Since there have been some questions about it, I thought I would start a thread.

Anyone curious, please feel free to ask anything about double towing. We've pulled the Focus about 9,000 miles so far and love it.!! I'm sure George and Lisa and maybe Brad will add some info too.

I'll post a picture of our rig if my iPad allows it. Lol

Nice looking rig! Just curious though, what's the height difference between the trailer receiver and the tow bar connections on the toad? Most tow bar manufacturers recommend 3" or less. Your's looks to be more than that. May not be more, just looks that way in the pic. Do you have a rear view camera on the fiver?

Thanks ! I'm right around 3" drop. Called BlueOx to talk to them as the next drop down on the hitch would actually have the towbar going uphill. They told me to leave it where I am and it should be fine. So far in over 9,000 miles the little guy has just followed along fine. Only way to tell its back there is look in cameras or on a tighter turn.

And yes, three camera system. One looking at car and rear and one on each side looking down side of coach.

Never measured it. If I'm ever asked I want to be honest when I say I don't know. Best guess is around 75'. So far in 23 states it hasn't been an issue and we've been looked at by many LEOs of all types. Been all up and down east coast and most of gulf coast and then across to the west. Currently in Arizona

Doubles

Towing Doubles in NYS is only legal on certain roadways like I90. Those roadways have drop off yards at the entrance and exits for a place to leave and pick up the second one. Mainly designed for tractor trailer use.

Its illegal in some states like Ga, Fl, for example. I've done it and haven't been bothered, but others have. Just a heads up

So far no issues. Have been through Florida three different times as far south as Orlando and across to Tampa and then across the panhandle. Up the east cost and into New York. Across on I 90 and then through the nidwest. Currently in Arizona.
Have been looked at by all types of LEOs from state to local and pretty much in every state. Only ones that showed any interest was SC trooper that followed me for about two miles and then pulled around and gave me thumbs up out the window and the NC trooper that pulled up next to us in rest area and was curious about tow and brake setup. He and I spent twenty minutes with coffee talking RVs and boats.

Car and all tow setup is just shy of 3000 lbs

Bill - the car is setup just like behind a gas motorhome. Blue Ox towbar and baseplate, SMI Stay in Play Duo permanently mounted progressive braking system. Cameras on back of coach, reinforcements on hitch.
Truck is a F350 Dually with max tow option, Bilstein shocks, Helwig sway bars and 245 Comfort Ride Hitch, air bags and onboard remote compressor for ride control. Coach has MorRyde IS suspension, MorRyde pinbox and Kodiak disc brakes.

Don’t you need a commercial license for anything over 65ft. ?

Never need a commercial license for a private vehicle. Licensing requirements vary tremendously by state. For instance in Maryland where we were before I had a Class A non commercial. South Dakota only issues two types of non commercial licenses - vehicles or motorcycle. Have email from SD motor vehicle stating I'm legal to drive the rig.

Rig itself is technically not legal in some states but no issues so far. As a friend who is a trooper told me " if you've got a good looking rig and it's obvious to me that it's set up correctly and you know how to drive it, I've got much better things to do than hassle you ".
