Not a great travel day

Well, sometimes all of the preventive maintenance is for naught. We try to make sure we've got all the bases covered and do the maintenance to avoid issues. However, every once in a while you get bit anyway. Yesterday was one of those ....

We are currently in Cedar City, UT , Indian Peaks RV Park. Limped in here yesterday afternoon with r/rear trailer wheel almost coming off. Only thing holding wheel on was the rotor turning in the caliper, both of which are trash.

We were running down I-15 headed to Fredonia, AZ. Only been on road about an hour. I have a habit when we are on road of stopping at least every two hours and immediately walking the rig with a infrared temp gun to check all the tires. We had the bearings checked, packed and serviced at MorRyde in April and have traveled about 2500 miles since then with no issues. Every time I checked, all wheels and tires running within a few degrees of each other.

Running along happily when another RV pulls next to us waving and pointing. Pull off the road and as we stop smoke comes rolling forward and at first thought wheel and tire were on fire. Not quite, but was getting there. Outer Bearing had failed and wheel was at an angle with rotor rubbing caliper. Super hot, pictures attached don't do it justice. Got lucky in a number of ways - we were within a mile of an exit, and right off the exit was a campground with big pull through sites. Also have a Mobile Truck and Trailer repair that was close and has already been out yesterday and pulled wheel to see what we've got. Was the tech's opinion that the bearing preload was too tight. Tend to agree, but the fact that it made that many miles, I'm not sure.

Called MorRyde this morning. Can't say enough good things about this company. Rob the Service Manager also mentioned that if it was too tight, he didn't think it would've gone this long. At the same time, he said "doesn't really matter, we were the last ones in there and we need to fix it. Please give me the contact info for the repair service and I'll get with them. We've got any parts they will need here at the plant and I'll have them overnighted this afternoon".

Tracy and I both said it could've been a bunch worse. We could have had a fire and lost our home or we could have gone the other way we were thinking of and had this happen 50 miles out in the middle of nowhere.

Pictures attached below. Hopefully they will be right side up. The iPad isn't great for posting pics correctly.

That was HOT-HOT! Glad it stayed together for you long enough to pull over Vaughan. Super great that Mor-Ryde is going to take care of it.

I've got to say I'm happy with the suspension, the hitch and the Dually also. Good or bad - I never felt any difference in the rig. It downshifted from 6-5 at one point where I didn't really see any reason it should have but didn't pick up on why. Thinking now that was when the wheel got to the point it tilted in and was causing a lot of drag. Rig was at all times straight and true. Not to say a normal buggy spring wouldn't have been the same, don't know. I do know that had it been drum brakes we would have lost the wheel. Only thing that kept the wheel on was the disc in the caliper.

I'll take a picture of the wheel cap with the charred remnants of bearing in it and post a bit later.

Vaughn,

I was under the impression you were spending the summer in West Yellowstone. Did you change your mind?

I'm also now going to carry a spare rotor, caliper pack and a couple sets of bearings and seals. That should guarantee I don't have this happen again !!

Vaughn, is your axle stub OK through all of that? I carry spare rotor, bearing set, seal & grease in my spares kit, but figured if I needed those, it would probably take out the axle too.

You were lucky you didn't loose the axle. The spindle was too chewed up to save the axle when the bearings on our rear axle let go

Agreed - especially with the IS, A spindle is a big deal to r place. All the parts cam from MorRyde today overnight and the tech from the road service finished up a few hours ago. On our way tomorrow.

All put back together and ready to roll. Headed to Page AZ tomorrow on Lake Powell. Can't say enough nough good about MorRyde service and also if you're ever in lower Utah or Nevada and need road service - Kaos Solutions is top notch. Very timely, good techs and a fair price.

And the RV dream goes on ......

We had this happen two years ago except our wheel came off. Both axles had to be replaced. Thank God for All state.
