I too used to prefer a manual but now I sure do like the no shifting
I wish dodge would put the 9 speed allison in the 4500/5500 I know it's designed for the 5 tons it weighs a ton and is over kill BUT

Heck, even the off road jeepers are finding it's much easier to handle an auto in the rough stuff then heel and toe and feather the throttle and cluctch and brakes at the same time

Ya, the 69 Bronco with an automatic was the envy of the jeep owners when I was growing up.

GM and I think Ford, don't even offer a manual xmission in the Diesel trucks.
I too at time miss shifting gears, as that's what I learned to drive at and early age, but the new breed to automatics with lockup torque converters are great.
Talking automatics, any body familar to the old Dodge Fluid Drive (nick named Dish Water Drive)? A three speed manual and required clutching for shifting gears, but could stop while in gear without stalling. (I know showing my age)

I have not Vaughan. It's amazing how cautious you get when you haven't been off road for a while

I'm going to have to go bury it in the snow somewhere so I can try it out.

Before my time, but remember my dad talking about them. I had a similar version in a VW super beetle. You could shift like a manual, or just put it in a gear and leave it there. It had a high stall torque converter and an electric clutch activated by slight down pressure on the shifter knob. Kinda hated it.

I remember that in the Super Beetle well ~ put myself through school after the Marine Corps as a Foreign Car Mechanic. We all truly hated that electric clutch setup.

Give me a good English Sports Car that I could fix with a 1/2" wrench, baling wire, WD 40 and cuss at it in a Cockney Accent !! Still miss my assorted Triumphs, MG's and especially the Jaguar E Type that is worth now more than the RW and Truck combined .......

Ah, my '71 Triumph TR6 with multiple 2 barrel carbs and wire wheels and conver. top was the fun car on the college campus ! I could get 5 or 6 ladies in there at once !

the butterfly valves controlling the carbs had a hiccup and I thought it would be good to lower the fast idle by riding the clutch

My one and only foray into rebuilding a manual tranny and clutch in my dorm room...
only had 2 parts left over, but it ran fine afterwards

Brings back a lot of great memories

True --- I always liked the way the rear tires would 'splay' out like that especially under power it would squat !
and small world - I next had a Datsun 240z with the T-tops and turbo - how I survived that thing I'll never know
https://www.google.com/search?q=dats...utf-8&oe=utf-8

I think they called it a zx ?!?!

Saw one not long ago on the road and my wife and I were like DANG we dated in something THAT little !!!

if ONLY I had kept those two cars - could buy that new Newell for cash !

When I think of the cars I owned at different times, what I sold them for back when, and what they would be worth now ..........

How about a '64 Chevy Impala SS with a 409, 2 four barrels and a 4-speed. Was my daily driver in '72, sold it for $2k and figured that was all the money in the world. Saw one like it only with single four barrel go thru Barrett-Jackson last year and brought high side of $100k. Oh if only we knew ...........

How some of us survived at all I will never know. 17 years old, folks away for thanksgiving and dad's bottle of Wild Turkey between my legs at 2:00 in the morning on black ice - I lived, but that sweet Olds 442 did not.

Folks didn't come home from Nebraska for a few more days, so I had a lot of time to sober and fix my story. They never heard the whole story. No traffic ticket, just a police report. They actually felt sorry for me and helped me find a new car - a 68 Firebird.

Quite frankly, I'm appalled that this thread has degenerated into civil discourse. Where's the fun in that?!

Wrecking a "Olds 442" should require a horse whipping
