CAT Scale weights

Today was a beautiful day, thought I'd take the opportunity to get to a CAT Scale and finally get numbers for my rig. With a Ford F350 club cab long bed single rear wheel and a 31SL I'm within all maximums. I figured I was but this takes my concerns away. Here are my weights:

Truck unhitched: Steering Axle: 4700 lb
Drive Axle: 3360 lb

All of my weights were with the truck full with 37 gallons of diesel fuel, hitch installed, and my wife and I both in the front seat.

Truck and 31SL hitched: Steering Axle: 4760 lb
Drive Axle: 5740 lb
Trailer Axle: 10,740 lb
Total Gross weight: 21,240 lb

My Trucks Gawr Rear is: 6290 lb
GCVWR: 23,500 lb

My 31SL Pin Weight figures out to be: 2380 lb

I will also state that I did not have any wqter in tanks and very rarely travel with any water in tank.

Rick,
I bet that's a relief. I'm thinking about having my weight checked at the Rally. I have been traveling with water in the tank.

Scott, you will probably be fine since you have a dually. It's always good to know exactly where you fall with the total weights. Gives you an idea if you could load more and if so where would you want to load it.

That is a nice weigh in for a SRW. Almost wish I was there and could dump this DRW.

It works for us. We do have quartz countertops but we do not have the generator installed. With a generator installed and water in the tanks this SRW may not work. We really did not want to go with a dually. There are times that we wished we had a larger rig but it doesn't matter how large the rig is there will be times you wished it was bigger. I better stop before this conversation takes a much different direction.

I hear you on the size of the rig. Every time Dory and I shop together, we never come home with anything small. Conservatism seems to get left at home

Rick - Thanks so much for your post. I am a newbie looking at fivers in the 35' range to tow with a 1 Ton Chevy SRW, and the 31SL looks like a very interesting candidate. There are lots of things to learn and lots of numbers & opinions flying around the internet as to what can be towed with what, so I am thrilled anytime I see measured weights on a setup similar to what I'm looking for.

I notice that your load is about 1000# over the RW specified dry weight. That seems pretty light. The cargo weight listed in the posts I've seen range from about 1500 to 3000 lb...depending on how heavy a packer you are. The average seems to be around 2000# for a few weeks to a few months trip.

Can you provide some details on your load? Is most of that personal cargo or is some of it unaccounted manufacture's options, that is do you know what the dry weight of the trailer was when you received it? I keep reading that I should expect most fivers to come in heaver than the advertised specs. Were you packed up and ready to hit the road or is this just the weight of the stuff you normally leave in the trailer? I notice that your pin-to-weight ratio is very near (even slightly less) than the Redwood spec. Do you have much stuff stored in the basement and forward compartment?

I apologize in advance for all the questions, but I'm really trying to learn as much as I can, since mistakes can be expensive! And I'm one of those guys that really wants to stay within the load ratings of my truck.

Thanks again,
Danny

Danny, first of all, my wife and I are not fulltimers at this time. We hope to be in the near future but we have a home we a currently trying to sell. Our 31SL came from the factory weighing 12,400lbs. We have the quartz countertops(no longer offered) which added some extra weight. The weights I stated are with almost everything we need with the exception of food and clothes and toiletries. Our pots, pans, blankets, sheets, towels, coffee maker, silverware were already packed when weighed. My basement is already loaded with most tools and accessories we need. We are very conservative packers though and when we do full time we will need to be careful with where we pack additional items. We will try not to pack heavy items in our bedroom closet because that will add to pin weight. Keep the questions coming. I'll help any way I can.

Rick - Thanks so much for the response. This is great information.

I'm curious about your Air Conditioners. Are you pretty much satisfied, that is do they keep you cool, but mostly how loud are they? Do you have to turn up the TV etc. when they cut on, are they loud to sleep under when running? Do you know what brand you have?

Good luck with selling the house.

You will definately be impressed with how quiet the ACs are on the Redwood. I miss that more than anything from ours. They had some airflow issues, but very quiet. (Coleman Briskair). The low profile units we have now on our motorhome are terrible with regards to noise.

Danny, I definitely agree with Brad, the air conditioners are very quiet. They do not bother us at all at night. We just spent 4 days in Arkansas with temperatures hovering around 100 every day and we had no problem keeping the inside temps at 77 degrees. We actually had the thermostat set for 77 most of the time. I did drop the setting at night on the bedroom thermostat so the a/c would come on during the night. I like a cool bedroom. I understand that many have experienced issues with the a/c keeping up but they are much larger rigs and that may be causing some of the issues. Also, several have had to modify their venting system to allow more air circulation. The day we arrived at our destination in Arkansas, the inside temp of the RV was 99 degrees. We turned on the a/c units and were able to get the temp down to high 70's within a few hours.

This is for those that only look at Brochure weights when picking their TV.
My '16 39MB has a brochure weight of 13996, weight leaving the Factory was 15848, which is without any propane or Satellite Dish. Add those in and your're at 16000 easy, 2000 over the published brochure number. Plus the pin is just over a 1000 Lbs more than brochure.

that is why i had 8k axles installed. Even though Lippert says you can go 10% over the ratings I was not comfortable.

Something doesn't sound right there. Are we now supposed to condition the purchase of an RV on scale weights?

Our 2014 36RL brochure was pin weight ~2650. Reality once we loaded and added water:

4,300 lbs. pin weight
17,200 lbs. total actual weight.

I don't think you will get close to that with the 31, but mhs4771 is right, the brochures are bare bones weights.

My RL as of just before the Rally and a CAT scale was at 16,890 and 3670 pin weight.
Like Brad said - brochure said 2640 for pin.

Mine weighed on the smart weigh at the rally was 17250 total with a 3950 pin weight. Also the driver side tires were carrying 868 lbs more than curb side. I am running 6700 lbs on each of the 7k axles. I will be putting 8k axles on shortly. You can never go by manufacturers #s when selecting a TV unless you add a couple thousand lbs
