2015 Ram 3500 Integrated Brake Controller

Just looking for insight....I have the brake controller set to Heavy Electric and I can barely feel the trailer slow down. I've had the RAM and RV Dealer look into it separately. The RV Dealer says they can lock the wheels with the break away switch and the brakes are functioning. The RAM dealer says all is well also. I have yet to take it in to someone with both connected, as the RV dealer doesn't work with the tow vehicles.

Is anyone having the same issues or is your integrated brake controller able to "lock" the trailer wheels?

Thanks,
Gene

Don't have a Ram truck but suspect your problem is the RW. Several issues with the drum brakes, #1 too small of wire ran to each wheel, #2 brake shoes contaminated with grease due to inferior grease seals & pumping to much grease into the EZ Lube zerks.
Best fix is to upgrade to disc brakes from whoever took over Titan Guys business, difference of night & day in stopping ability. If not in for the upgrade to disc you'll need to run I believe #10 gauge wire from the pin box to each wheel & remove all drums to replace brakes, the cheapest way is to buy complete backing plates with brake assemblies.

I assume since you mention that you have your controller set to heavy electric that your your Redwood has electric brakes. Have you also set the gain control? It should likely be set in the range of 6 to 10.

If you have disk brakes, your 2015 RAM should have a setting in brake controller menu for "Electric over Hydraulic". You will need to select that mode for disk brakes and then set the gain control to provide good braking function.

If you can swing it disc brakes are amazing compared to the drum brakes. Peace of mind!

Thanks Shane! I do have the gain on 10.

My new Ram is set for my Disc Brakes to Heavy Electric over Hydraulic and the Brake Gain is set at 6.5, the trailer brakes work great stopping us very quick and short when needed.

My guess is the issue is in the trailer brakes or brake wiring not the truck.
If you have the Standard Electric Drum Brakes, common issues are grease on the brake linings / drums, incorrect brake adjustment and/ or undersized wiring not getting enough current / amps to the brakes to fully energize the magnets on the drum brakes.

Can you bring the trailer to a stop using just the brake controller at a rolling 5mph?

I replaced all the entire brake assembly Drums pads and all when we added the new Timken bearings last spring. I also checked this past weekend and the wire used on our RW is #10. I have our controller in the truck at 6 now and can feel the trailer first over the truck when stopping. I have checked the adjustment (self adjusting Brakes HA HA) a few times over the summer and almost every time they needed to be tightened up one click or more.

That being said I have a Buddy that has the Disc brakes and his feels like he has better braking than ours. The reason I put the drums back on and did not go to Discs is the dealer supplied all the parts. We had requested it fixed many times and they said we had no problems. You should have see the faces of the Tech when I took the grease soaked drums to them to show them what they missed.

I may still go to disc brakes in the spring but trailer put away for winter now.

When I had to have the gain set to 10 in our 15 RAM, it was because the drum brake pads were gone. Now that we have disks, it is set to 6.0.

I wonder how the dealer tested your brakes? I bet it was in the shop with 1 tire off the ground and the smallest tech trying to spin the tire. No way they would try it pulling it with the fork lift.

If they had just taken off the tire and pulled the drum they could have seen the mess inside and would have known it needed fixed. They just did a poor job of inspection on the problem. Twice they told us it only needed adjusted when we really had a much bigger problem. It is now fixed and working much better but I ended up doing it myself.

I think I placed to much emphasis on the "lock" up part. The truck/trailer will not come to a complete stop even at 5mph. I do feel a slight engagement of the brakes.

When mine were like this, not stopping, they found all were covered with grease. I had never greased them myself. All 4 sets were replaced.
