Yellowstone, Teton travel help please.

Has anyone traveled on US 20-26 out of Jackson Wyoming to Casper? This would be pulling my 38foot RW. Or should I go back through Yellowstone and go from Cody to 14A to 310 to I-94. I want to get on I 90 to Deadwood. I am planning my next summer trip.

I lived in Casper for a year during the energy boom of the 70s. You shouldn't have any problem as 20/26 is a truck route. Of course, at that time of year, you may have to worry about blowing snow!

Use the Trucker Path app, type in the to/from destinations & if it's a truck route you shouldn't have any problems.

We just made that trip from Casper to Jackson back in late May, decent road, not much traffic then. Snowed on us going over the pass that I can't pronounce north of Jackson and we didn't get to see the Tetons. All in all we enjoyed the trip.

We left town of Yellowstone, went through West entrance of park on the top side of lower section of park, views were spectacular, had to stop a couple of times for wildlife, took Hwy 14 \ 20 to Cody and went over the Big Horn mountain to Sheridan Wyoming, we then took I 90 to Rapid City and Deadwood.
The Big Horn took about 30 mins of steady climbing, but my Ford F350 beast that it is pulled our 39MB with no problem, there is a restaurant at the top where we stopped and ate lunch before descending. The trip was most enjoyable, and we saw country that we had only dreamed about.
Good luck planning your trip, travel safely.

Jeff and Karen, my wife and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone this summer. So I would assume the there is plenty of clearance going through the tunnels on 14 west of Cody?

Greg, I'm hoping to hear on this also as we will be going to West Yellowstone this summer to workamp. Have to be out there May 1 or close to that so not sure exactly what route we will take as I'm sure there will still be snow.

We will be there late Aug. so I don't think snow would be a problem. I would think that there would be a strong possibility of snow in early May.

Vaughan,

You are living the dream!!!! Congratulations.... We are very close but need another year or two to get everything in order.
It's harder then expected to empty out 51 years of stuff in this house!

Send a message via AIM to NW Snowbirds
We drove through Yellowstone from Cody to West Yellowstone the third week of last September. There was snow in the park but there were no problems with clearances on bridges and underpasses.

Plan your fuel - I ended up short getting to Cody from north Yellowstone in my 26 gal SRW. If I remember, I think I passed on two stations with low canopies and I shouldn't have.

Vaughan

If you have the time, try and plan to go see Glacier Park in NW Montana. I grew up there (many, many years ago) and it is not to be missed.

Jim, Brad thanks to both of you ! Brad I think you may have pushed along my decision to put in a Titan replacement tank. Would be nice to have 61 gals rather than 37. At the very least I think I'll carry a 5 gal "what if" can. Lol. Mpg with the car in tow has settled in at 9.7, down a bit from the 10.2-10.4 I had before but I'll take the trade off for the convenience of having the car. We couldn't have done half of what we did or where we went in New Orleans with the Dually

Jim, were hoping to get there. One of the nice aspects of our job this summer is 4 days on and 3 days off to go explore. And having cats as pets makes it easy. Just have to get someone to fed them once a day and pet them.

Vaughan, after the second time shutting down before the fuel ran out and calling AAA because I wasn't going to make it, I went for the yellow diesel can in the bed of the truck as a "what if" just like you say (Ironically, both times were in WY). I was always going to get an auxiliary tank that fit in there with the rolling top, but never did.

Another lesson I didn't necessarily learn by experience but figured out driving across Nevada on Highway 50 - Keep the toad full of gas! That Toad is your salvation if you break down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. It would be a real Darwin award if it had 1/8 tank of gas I got in a bad habit of hooking it with low fuel not giving it a second thought.

Hey Vaughn, you could always put your wife in the car and have her shove you bet your mileage would go through the roof!!!! Seriously when you get out West and into some serious mountain grade you might want to think about splitting the car from RW. Depending on which route you may encounter some switch backs and they can get pretty narrow and steep.

The road from Reno to Tahoe comes to mind.... I had the wife drive our Jeep Wrangler on that section.
