Asheville to Pigeon Forge

A quick question for anyone who has been this way - is 40 or 41 the better route through the mountains from Asheville with our rigs ?

If you mean 441, that's over the mountain thru the park. I believe there is a low clearance under pass. If you mean 411 I can't help. We passed thru Ashville two weeks ago, north bound on I 26.

Vaughn,

Take I-40, forget US441. 441 has some low clearances, horribly windy and VERY narrow, especially when you go through Great Smokey Mountains NP between Cherokee NC and Gatlinburg TN.
I-40 is good road, there are some steep passes, mostly on the eastern portions before entering TN. There are a couple of tunnels in this section, the clearances posted say you shouldn't have problems but I cruise down the middle of the two lanes using the center of the tunnels...and stay puckered the whole time

It is a beautiful drive...just take it slow and easy!!

Thanks Chuck and Mark ~ that was exactly the kind of info I was hoping for. Kind of suspected that 441 was not RW friendly just looking at the map.

Our last trip that way we stayed at Two Rivers Landing and super clean. I can't recall the RT# but one of the main ones through that area. We came in late but the closed office had maps and info on what sites to take for late arrivals and just come see them in the morning.

I 40 through this area is beautiful but has some spectacularly scary looking runaway truck ramps. Interestingly, last year when I was in this area some of the e-notice boards on the highway were hacked...

Have fun - stay safe and mind the deer.
