Sealant/caulking of Exterior Trim

Was wondering what everyone uses for resealing trim on the exterior of the coach. Please provide specific products and also whether you attempt to remove existing sealant or any other recommendations you may have. I do not want to damage the paint!

I use Geocel 2300 MHRV Clear. Hard to find but works great. Usually the stuff to come off comes off without damaging paint.

At our 1 year inspection, the dealership put sealant on a few places on the coach; but after hubby did some research, the silicone needs to be removed completely. (they just re-caulked over the joints and silicone does not stick to silicone)

He purchased DSR-5 Silicone & Adhesive Remover and will be using that to remove old sealant prior to re-sealing.

The stuff he purchased to re-seal is ProFlexRV flexible sealant, I believe.

I found this info on another forum.

"I called the technical folks at Geocel and they told me that ProFlex Geocel is exactly the same product as the 2300 mhrv. It's just in different tubes for different markets.

I also found these comments in another forum:

"I called Geocel customer service and spoke with Patty, to find out the difference in the products:

2350 MHRV is only slightly different than 2300 MHRV. The difference is that it is better suited for large gaps (1/2" or so).

The formulation of both 2300 MHRV and Pro Flex RV is identical.

She didn't think it was worth the extra money for the MHRV 2350 as opposed to the Pro Flex RV. Also, 2350 MHRV is only sold to manufacturers."

Ya I've read that before - but I had absolutely no luck with the Pro Flex, so maybe that's why Patty is in Customer Service

I've only been able to get the stuff at the Dealer. Never found it online.

Amazon has some, Brad.

I think I did get it once from them Ken, you're right! Seems they don't have any right now - it says "not available".

I did learn not to stock up on it, as shelf life is short (1 year) and it is awful after 2 years.

Hello All,

I have been reading up on sealants to use for the trim and for D-seals (i.e. sealing the D-Seal to side wall of RV). The following sealants have been mentioned all over the place in this forum:

1) GeoCel 2300 Clear Construction Tripolymer Selant
2) GeoCel 2300 MHRV Clear
3) Proflex RV Flexible Sealant

I am interested in sealing up some areas for the trim (not the roof) and I want to redo the D-Seals that my dealer did for me (they used Silicone and the stuff doesn't work at all... they still come out of the track).

Here are my questions:

1) Which of the 3 sealants above is a good one to use. I want to use one that is easy to work with.

2) I have read that for GeoCel 2300 MHRV, you can apply new stuff over the old stuff.

3) How do you get Silicone off without damaging the paint? If solvents are required, exactly what type, brand to use?

4) I have read that the factory uses (or used) the 2300 MHRV Clear. I have a 2016 Sequoia. Do you think that my unit would have the 2300 MHRV Clear on it?

I appreciate any info regarding this. As always, I am just trying to use the right stuff.

Thanks,
Mike

As you can see from my comments a few years ago, I tried several sealants - the Proflex was tough to apply, and impossible to remove. it came off in rubber balls - terrible to work with.

I was the most happy with the 2300 MHRV. My Redwood Dealer handed me a tube of it years ago and said it was the best he had used and I've used it since.

Thanks Brad. I am leaning towards that one. Do you use this stuff on your motor home? I would imagine that a motor home needs sealant here and there also.

Anybody have any input for the other questions (particularly #2 & #3)?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

For some reason my D seals failed on my Redwood the 2nd year, so I went through the whole frustration of trying to replace them all myself and going through the seal issue with full body paint. The 2300 MHRV worked well after trial and error with some others, and yes, I have used it on the motorhome in some of the same areas for touch up. MHRV stands for Motorhome & Recreational Vehicle special formula.

Just note - don't load up on it, as it has a 1 year shelf life.

I was under the impression that MHRV and Pro Flex were the same product. Just labeled differently for consumers.

I heard that too - but they sure don't act the same. If it were true, the marketing from Geocel wouldn't make sense either - one plentiful and easily purchased, the other limited distribution to repair shops. It wouldn't make sense if they were the same product.
